Mace Bishop masquerades as a hangman in order to save his outlaw brother from the gallows, runs to Mexico chased by the Sheriff's posse and fights against Mexican bandits.
Yes indeed, this movie was indeed used as the basis for McMurtry's Pulitizer Prize winning novel written later. I posted that info here years ago, but my comment was mysteriously removed.
Anyway, some of the main characters and the plot of the movie were used by McMurtry. James Lee Barrett, the acknowledged screenwriter of Bandolero may have had a working relationship with McMurtry, as Barrett's also wrote the movie "Cheyenne Social Club," which ALSO has McMurty's fingerprints all over it, AND Cheyenne Social Club was ALSO used to partially form the basis of Lonesome Dove.
I am pretty sure Mcmurtry WAS involved in Bandolero. James Lee Barrett is NOT McMurtry--meaning that James Lee Barrett was not just a pseudonym for McMurtry.
Barrett is listed as screenwriter for Bandolero and Cheyenee Social Club (which was also obviously a source for LD).
I know this because Barrett played a small part in another old movie, which I bought and viewed.
Just remember that McMurtry wrote an entire book (Film Flam) on the Hollywood movie business. He wrote this many many YEARS, like in 1980 or so. Yet if you search IMDb for credits for him from years prior to that, you will find nothing for him. So where did he get all this Hollywood experience to write a book (and a character in one or two of his earlier books was a screenwriter).
McMurtry was almost certainly what is known as a script doctor. Often uncredited, these people are paid to come in and touch up and rewrite scripts, often while the movie is being filmed. So, it is likely that McMurtry worked with Barrett on Bandolero and Cheyenne Social Club, and was not credited for that, as is often the case with script doctors.
The only one who can really tell us is Larry McMurtry, as Barrett is now dead.
A man poses as a hangman to rescue his brother, who has been condemned to hang. The decade of the 1960s was the last hurrah for the Western, culminating in such landmarks as "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "The Wild Bunch." This will never make the list of the great Westerns of the decade, but it's quite entertaining. Stewart and Martin are not necessarily believable as brothers, but each is OK in roles that are not very demanding. Welch is pretty as a Mexican hottie, although she displays no talent for acting at this stage of her career. Kennedy does well as a sheriff who is in pursuit of the brothers, but hopes to capture Raquel's heart.
