21 Jul 2010 Okular works well for adding annotations, but it doesn't help at all for adding a signature to PDF docs. For that GIMP used to come with Ubuntu, but as the developers added more abilities, the folks at Ubuntu decided it had become more than the basic functionality they like to include with the base install.
Import the PDF into Gimp, as 1 .xcf file per page: gimp f1040.pdf. A dialog box appears. Change the "Open pages as" dropdown to "images" so that each PDF page becomes a separate image. Click the Import button. Images will open for each page. Save the files as p01.xcf and p02.xcf for pages 1 and 2 respectively.

As an alternative, a PDF (or any other file) may be signed using a detached signature with GPG or any of its numerous frontends (such as Kleopatra or Kgpg in KDE). On Ubuntu: Install Xournal through the Ubuntu Software Center. Open Xournal. Select "Annotate PDF" from the File menu and select your PDF file to be signed. Click the "Image" button in the toolbar (it looks like a silhouette of a person). Select a PNG image of your signature. Resize and position the image on the PDF.
