In the year 2045, on his death bed James Halliday, the creator of a wildly popular virtual reality utopia known as the OASIS, begins a hunt for his fortune and ownership of the whole VRMMO world with puzzles and riddles based on Halliday's obsession with pop culture of decades past. After years of searching for Haliday's "Easter Egg," one average teenager named Wade Watts solves the first clue, he sparks excitement and hope back to the hunt, and throwing him into a world of people willing to kill for the information he has, changing his life forever.
In the year 2045, the real world is a harsh place. The only time Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) truly feels alive is when he escapes to the OASIS, an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spends their days. In the OASIS, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone-the only limits are your own imagination. The OASIS was created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who left his immense fortune and total control of the Oasis to the winner of a three-part contest he designed to find a worthy heir. When Wade conquers the first challenge of the reality-bending treasure hunt, he and his friends-aka the High Five-are hurled into a fantastical universe of discovery and danger to save the OASIS.
I hate being "the book was better" guy, but damn they really missed it on this one. The first one minute was like the book after that it was completely different. If you didn't read the book you'll probably love it. I'm guessing that's where most of the 9/10 reviews are coming from. The book was so much better in every way though, I wished they would of kept it how it was instead of rewriting the whole thing. If you didn't read the book do so, it won't take long and I bet you the price of your next movie ticket that you'll agree with me. Anyway the special effects were good I don't regret seeing it; it could of been so much better though. I can't understand why they changed the script so much. It was literally written for them. If you have the answers please let me know. I hope that helps. Worth $2 at redbox not theater prices.
This film is full of juicy bits and very entertaining. The whole OASIS and stuff idea and how he tries to find all 3 of the keys from Halliday, is just a wonderful idea for a film. I thought the special effects were great and very realistic! Good work!
Dazzling in form and a chase film at its heart, Ready Player One is exhilarating, but it also can’t sit still. Fitting to the content perhaps, the movie still arguably suffers from troublesome A.D.D. with its hyper fast cutting and its tendency to wander narratively.
