The 1942 battles of the Coral Sea and Midway island are retold through the points of view of both sides. When an audacious US air raid reaches Japan itself, Combined Fleet commander Isoroku Yamamoto orders seaborne invasions of Port Moresby in the southwestern Pacific and of Midway Island near Hawaii, invasions that Yamamoto hopes will smoke out the US Pacific Fleet for destruction before the full might of US war production can kick in. The Japanese are supremely confident of victory over the vastly outnumbered US fleet, but they are unaware that US Navy intelligence has cracked the Imperial Navy's codes, allowing the US to deploy aircraft carriers to maximum counteroffensive effect.
The battle of midway is done with captions to identify historical characters. Historically accurate in its major points, a subplot of an American flyer who is engaged to a Hawiian girl of Japanese descent has been added. This is the battle in which the previously undefeated Japanese fleet was stopped in a battle during which all damage was done by aircraft. The opposing fleets never saw each other.
How dumb is this? A war film which tries to copy another war film made 6 years earlier (Tora Tora Tora, 1970).
Upchuck Heston is drawn as a god of sorts by director Jack "Hack" Smight. In one scene, Hal Holbrook is standing right in front of Heston, but looks up at Heston like he's looking at a painting on the ceiling.
There must have been something about Bob Webber that Heston didn't like because Heston is cold to him whenever they're on screen together -- or maybe Heston just didn't like playing junior to Webber in rank. Newsflash, Upchuck: IT'S A MOVIE, YOU DILDO! Upchuck Heston.... pffft.
If you get the chance to watch this navy bugle oil, pull up the gangplank and go full-steam-ahead out to sea.
This movie could have been one of the best war movies ever made. It had a great cast, great music by John Williams and good action. The thing I hate about it, is that this film used way too much stock footage from other movies and they didn't create any new special effects for the film. Instead they took footage from other movies like "I bombed Pearl Harbor" and "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and didn't create any new scenes. This was a major draw back and gave me the thought that this movie was cheaply done (possibly due to the money needed for actor salaries) and could have been made better. I hope they make a new movie about Midway and do better.
