Wells, scientist and inventor, Alexander Hartdegen, is determined to prove that time travel is possible. Testing his theories with a time machine of his own invention, Hartdegen is hurtled 800,000 years into the future, where he discovers that mankind has divided into the hunter - and the hunted.Hoping to alter the events of the past, a 19th century inventor instead travels 800,000 years into the future, where he finds humankind divided into two warring races.I'm just going to list the very good things about this movie because it seems that the people who are determined to turn everybody against it are working overtime at making sure you hear about the slightest shortcoming in the film and blow it totally out of proportion. Short synopsis first: Warning-SOME SPOILERS HERE
This is the story of a man living in New York Victorian times who is an absent minded professor in love with a woman and finally gets up the nerve to propose to her. Then he suffers a terrible tragedy and tries to undo what happened by inventing a time machine to bring his love back to life. Doesn't work, so he travels to future for answers but due to an accident the machine takes him to 802,701 where he meets a beautiful Eloi girl and her brother who take care of him and nurse him to health. They're part of the Eloi tribe who live above ground and are menaced by the terrible Morlocks, who live underground. Alexander finds the answer to his poignant "What if?" in the person of the Uber Morlock-the Morlock leader and also saves Mara and her brother along the way and discovers that he has found something more promising in the future than in the past. He falls in love with Mara and she falls in love with him. Now they have to destroy the threat of the Morlocks to their happiness.. Guy Pearce did a very credible job as the time traveler. He had some very memorable emotional moments that showcased his fine acting skills. I hope he gets his due one day from his peers for being such a fine actor and committing himself so devotedly to his roles no matter what they are. Awesome effects made for some fine visual entertainment. Check out the beautiful New York scenes. There's a outstanding scene of the terrible effects of man messing with the moon. You will gasp at the beauty and terror of it, believe me. Good job here. Give an award to the person who created the Victorian era scenes and the Eloi dwellings. Gorgeous. Jeremy Irons-short time on screen but he was creepy and effective despite that with the role he was given. The Morlocks frightened me-they were horrible. Tell the kids before you take them to prepare them for some edge of your seat jarring scenes here. The ending scene where they blend two dimensions of time in one shot and you see a scene from the past and from the 802,701 time consecutively. That was very well done! All of these outstanding things and others pretty much enabled me to enjoy this movie immensely. I realize critics don't like remakes and slam all of them but this one is one for our time. A keeper and time well spent.Collect all the copies of this cinama travesty, and burn'em. Never was so little accomplished by so many, at such great of cost. I can only presume that somehow the U.S. Congress was involved in the making of this er-movie. The intention was good and that's about all. I waited with great expectations for the release of this film. Alas great dissapointment resulted. The script missed the essence of the authors original work. I'm so sorry to all those who worked so hard on this stinker, and also to those who spent hard earned cash, like myself, to endure it. Time, as they say, heals all wounds. Maybe in 800,000 years it will be true in this case too.This uninviting and pallid version, starring Guy Pearce, is intent on grinding all the sharp edges off the original story, in effect making the movie childproof, so no one can get hurt touching it.Following the shooting death of his girlfriend Emma (Sienna Guillory), New York scientist and professor Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) constructs a time machine able to transport him back in time in an attempt to prevent Emma's death. When she also dies in the new timeline, Alex realizes he can't alter the past and decides instead to go into the future to see whether answers might be found there. By mishap, he travels to the year 802,701 AD where he learns that the human race is divided into two factions: the peaceful cliff-dwelling Eloi and the monstrous, apelike subterranean Morlocks who eat them. When the Morlocks capture the only friend he's been able to make—the young and pretty Eloi Mara (Samantha Mumba)—Alex is faced with having to go underground to save her. The Time Machine is a remake of the 1960 classic, The Time Machine (1960), both of which were adapted from an 1895 novella, also titled The Time Machine, by English science fiction writer H.G. Wells [1866-1946]. The screenplay for the movie was written by American screenwriter John Logan. The main character was named George in the original movie. In the book, however, he was only referred to as "the time traveler." The Über-Morlock (Jeremy Irons) is referencing mankind as a whole. Man's constant need to advance itself ultimately became its undoing, which came in the form of the moon colony destroying its inner core and setting up the conditions that forced humanity to split into Eloi and Morlock. Because Vox (Orlando Jones), the Photonic Sphere built in 2030 AD, still exists and works. From it, the Eloi would have learned English. Mara speaks English so well because she teaches it to the Eloi. It might be assumed that the Über-Morlock knows English because of his telepathic ability to reach the minds of the Eloi. In the novel, however, the time traveler was unable to communicate with either the Eloi or the Morlocks, except by signs. Nobody spoke English. Alex successfully escapes from the Über-Morlock by hurling the time machine forward to the year 635,427,810 AD where he finds only a desolate valley overrun with Morlocks. Haing found the answer to his question—he cannot save Emma because it was her death that caused him to build the time machine, so by saving her, the machine would never have existed—he decides to return to the cave, rescue Mara, and alter the future. After releasing Mara, he jams his watch into the machine's controls and sets it working. The result is an explosion that reaches throughout the Morlocks' network of tunnels. Now, however, Alex is trapped in the year 802,701, so he sets forth to build a new life with Mara and Kalen (Omero Mumba). Vox is put to work reading stories and teaching English to the Eloi. The screen then splits in two, showing on the right Alex walking with Mara and Kalen through a field that was once Alex's home and on the left Philby (Mark Addy) and Mrs Watchit (Phyllida Law) strolling through the same area as it exists in 1903. Since Alex has disappeared, Philby asks Mrs Watchit whether she would be willing to become his housekeeper, at least until Alex returns, and Watchit agrees. The camera then pans around Alex's study, stopping at a view of the street outside the window. Philby walks past and tosses his bowler away. Yes.
