My mother actually did this once, quite accidentally. It was an auto, not a manual as in the OP, but we were on a driving holiday and our car was playing up. It was slipping out of gear about every 50km or so. So we (meaning my mother and father, as I was about 10) would have to shift into neutral, then back
In order to engage the reverse gear, the idler gear which is a straight tooth gear needs to be pushed to mesh with the pinion which by being powered directly by engine is always turning at a high speed. So, it is impossible for it to mesh with the pinion while the driven gear is turning in the opposite direction (the idler gear is

Nov 18, 2016 Manual transmissions have physical locks in the shift mechanism to make selecting reverse an active exercise. Barring lockout rings or pushing down on the stick shift, deliberately trying to select reverse while driving forward at normal speeds is basically impossible with a manual.
On a manual car, as mentioned above it makes a horrible grinding noise - but provides hilarious viewing for the driver behind you as the reverse lights only for the driver to have a heart attack as I'd changed gear accidentally, no damage done except to her heart rate as the car lost drive momentarily.

Jan 23, 2017 Here, we have a valid experiment – what happens if you jam your car into reverse while driving – I'm just not certain I'm down with the methodology. It's also worth noting that I'm pretty sure in a manual if you shift into reverse and pop the clutch at speed, you'll end up turning the inside of your transmission
If you happen knock your gearshift into reverse, don't panic. The reverse gear on any car with a manual transmission is an incredibly simple piece of machinery. Nor will the car stop on a dime and reverse into oncoming traffic, even though that's what happens in cartoons.
When I felt the car not accelerating I panicked and tried to throw it in drive. But accidentally threw it into reverse, the engine immediately died and the power steering, luckily I was about 5 feet from a turn into a gas station. I coasted into it and put it in park. I then turned the engine off. It took a couple seconds
