It is all too easy to think that responsibility for manual handling safety rests solely upon management and that it is up to the employer to prevent harm from coming to workers. As an employer you must comply with the risk assessment requirements set out in the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 as well as the requirement in the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHOR) to carry out a risk assessment on manual handling tasks.
When considering whether a manual handling operation "involves a risk of injury" and when determining appropriate risk reduction measures, MHOR reg. 4(3) applies. The Regulations do not set out the steps employers must take to reduce the risks to their workers.
