Make sure you have presoaked your willow shoots to be pliable. Then, use a sharp knife to cut vertical 5 cm (2.0 in) slits in the centers of the base shoots. To form the slath, line up 4 of the base shoots and weave them through the slits of the remaining 4 shoots.

Weaving the base: The base is woven with a 'pairing' weave. To begin, you'll be weaving clockwise around each of the four 'arms' of the slath to hold it tightly together. Select your two thinnest longest rods to use as weavers. You'll Start with their tip ends (the thinner ends).
Soak your Willow. Soak them in a bath tub in hot tap water. Lay a weight such as a building brick or 2, on top of the bundle to immerse it. After a 24 hour soaking, your rods will be ready to mellow and use.
