The Baptistery was built on the ruins of an existing Palaeochristian temple back in the 4th-5th Century.
It was dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, Patron saint of the Town and used as a Cathedral until 1128.
Porta del Paradiso was made by Andrea Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti and called "Heaven's Door" by Michelangelo.
The Dome represents Creation of the World and the Last Judgement (Byzantine motifs)
(I also want to mention that I have seen The Gates of Hell created by Peter Paul Rubens in England. It is similar to this door but represents Hell.)
