These three men refuse to enter the militia for Britain in 1757 for they want freedom. On their way to Kentucky, they intercept Indians attacking a small regiment of British including the two daughters of an British Colonel on their way to a fort. The three men lead the survivors to the fort while two love stories take place but the French and Indian War continues.As the British and French soldiers battle for control of the North American colonies in the 18th century, the settlers and native Americans are forced to take sides. Cora and her sister Alice unwittingly walk into trouble but are saved by Hawkeye, an orphaned settler adopted by the last of the Mohicans.This is my all time favorite movie. I have a passion for that time in history, and this was by far, the best story associated with it. The acting was supurb, and totaly realistic. The story line covered everything you would want in a movie, action, adventure, romance.Having not read the book the ending was the only thing puzzeling to me, did they stay together, die, or go there seperate ways, otherwise I could watch it over and over.Enough's been said by my fellow amateur reviewers here that I don't have much to add to remark about this film's greatness. Having seen more than enough of current movies, though, a contemporary director would modify this script to a point where there would be little resemblance to the 1992 work by Mann. First, the pioneer families would complain, complain, complain about being victims of the over- arching villainy of ordinary business interests, wanting to install a Marxist economic system more than anything. Second, Cora and Alice Munro would be using karate kicks, punches and against anyone who attacked them, Indians, French troops, you name it...then they'd slowly walk off after setting explosive charges and would be shown silhouetted against the huge balls of fire. Thirly, Hawkeye would find moments alone with Cora to express his inner feelings of inadequacy and burning hatred of all violence. He'd admit to being plagued by inner demons from the past that he has no power to banish. However, he'd later go out to meet the foe and commit countless stagy, gratuitous acts of violence for which we'd find little justification. Fourthly, Chingachgook would be the main character, keeping the other characters at arms' length, occasionally spouting phrases from Shirley MacClaine's latest works of religious impotence which have nothing to do with traditional American Indian culture or faith. Fifthly, the French would have wisely refrained from attacking British positions and would have already surrendered. Finally, Magua and his band would be revealed to be not American Indian at all, but the last remains from an early settlement of brutal, northern-European white males from the land of Halliburton.The first hour of The Last of the Mohicans plays like a convoluted history lesson. I appreciate that Mann has enough respect for the audience's intelligence to sketch in this briar patch of conflicting loyalties. But he outlines the interlocking factions without really making it clear, in dramatic terms, what each one stands for.This basic type of weapon was carried by many native American tribes dating back over a thousand years. Hawkeye uses a Pennsylvania Flintlock Rifle. Magua, having been spurned by the Huron sachem, resentfully leaves the Huron village with Alice, while Poe and Cora rejoin Chingachgook and Uncas. Poe shoots Duncan (Steven Waddington) to ease his suffering at being burned alive. Uncas runs ahead to catch up with Magua and rescue Alice. He manages to kill a few of Magua's warriors, but Magua winds up slashing his abdomen, stabbing him in the side, slitting his neck, and pushing him off a cliff before Chingachgook and Poe can catch up. Seeing Uncas killed, Alice inches close to the edge of the cliff. Magua reaches his hand out to her, but she allows herself to wordlessly topple over and join Uncas. When Poe catches up, he shoots several more warriors with his long rifles while Chingachgook engages Magua in hand/hand combat to avenge his son's death, eventually slicing Magua's abdomen open. In the final scene, Chingachgook, Poe, and Cora stand together at the edge of a cliff in silent ritual for Uncas' passing. Chingachgook then says a prayer to the Great Spirit, asking him to welcome Uncas into the Great Warrior's Council Fire and to ask all of his people who have gone before to await his coming, he who is the last of the Mohicans. Poe holds Cora in his arms as he and Chingachgook look sadly across the pristine hills and valleys. Yes, it is. The Blu-ray disc includes a version called Director's Definitive Cut (DDC), which is very confusing due to the fact, that Michal Mann created a Director's Cut (DC) years ago. After all these years, Mann sat down in the editing room once more and did the third cut of his film. This DDC is clearly more rooted in the theatrical cut and can be described as a mixture between the theatrical cut and the old DC. Here are many differences that do also exist between the theatrical cut and the old Directors Cut. The DDC mostly restores changes back to the way they were in the theatrical cut or keeps the extensions Mann made for the normal DC. This leads up to a runtime which is only approximately 2 minutes shorter than the old DC.
