A major in the United Defense Force media relationship department, without any experience of war is taken to a warfront against extraterrestial beings that have invaded the earth. He manages to kill an omega and in doing so aquires the ability to reset time everytime he dies. This brings a new beginning, new hope on winning the war.
The planet is invaded by aliens called Mimics. They have almost devastated the planet. But when they win a battle at Verdun, the Earth forces believe they have a chance at victory. So a major op is planned, and all soldiers are called in. William Cage, a Major in the Army who never saw any combat is asked to join. But refuses and even threatens his CO who in turn strips him of his rank and sends him to join a unit. They think that victory is in their grasp but the Mimics attack them before they could, killing them all. Cage manages to kill one of them before he dies but wakes up the day before. He tries to tell everyone what he knows but they don't believe him and when he dies he wakes up the day before again. He keeps on trying to warn them but to no avail. He notices Rita Vrataski, the hero of Verdun and tries to tell her what's happening to him. She tells him to see her when he wakes up, which he does. She tells him that the reason they won at Verdun is because the same thing happened to her. She killed a Mimic and it's blood entered her body and she would relive the day before and used her experience to beat the Mimics. Along with a scientist, they tell Cage that the Mimics are being led by something they call the Omega and the one he killed whose blood entered his body is what they call an Alpha who can relive the day when killed. They believe if they can locate the Omega and kill it they can beat the Mimics once and for all. So they tell Cage that the Alpha has some kind of link to the Omega so they believe Cage can see where the Omega is. But Vrataski lost the ability before she could find the Omega. Eventually Cage thinks he knows where the Omega is but to get to the Omega they have to survive the battle wherein they were all killed but no matter how much Cage warns her they always get killed. So they have to find another way to get to the Omega. Vrataski also warns Cage that if he gets wounded that he should kill himself because if he's wounded and gets a blood transfusion, he will lose the ability to relive the day, because that's what happened to Vrataski.
This has taken place of my all time favorite movie of Braveheart. What people don't understand is no other movie shows the desperation of a completely humble human being when he is subject to no other choice than survival. Same goes in breaveheart movie where Mel Gibson give in the the progression of events that leave no choice but to fight. The difference is he had a family to protect and he had few choices left but in this movie when aliens are wiping out all humans there was no choice left but to fight. This movie gives you courage and adrenalin rush you need to survive day today road rages and other events and suppress fear of getting harmed. If you think about fear as a feeling brought in by hormones you can control it. You can face the fact that you can look at your chopped arm and embrace the fact that you are ready to die without fear. Do not show your fear to anyone in any moment take a punch and live happily with the fact that you have a scar because you fear no one
Fun, action packed, and well written are just several compliments I give this film. I rarely go into the theater with high expectations, but sometimes I cannot help myself. The rare times I do go in with my expectations through the roof, I usually come out disappointed. This was not the case with "Edge of Tomorrow". This film is not just another run of the mill sci-fi film. Instead, it is the movie that could very well pave the way for video game films of the future. It takes a simple idea of "resetting" a battle and turns it into one of the most gripping stories I have seen at the cinema in recent years. Despite the fact that this story contains a decent number of nods to video games, it does not feel like it is about a video game. It still is a movie that is very story driven, but with the same amount of action that modern shooter games contain. The battles in this film are visually stunning, and they fit into the story perfectly. They do not come across as just another way of showing the audience the next "summer blockbuster". Each one, even the repeated ones, are filled with elements that make them memorable, and will stick with a person for long after he or she leaves the theater. One of the most surprising aspects of this film was the way that it managed to tell the overall story. As much as I was looking forward to it, I was worried that the film would feel a little long and redundant (considering the whole 'live, die, repeat' formula it showcased in the trailers). But instead, this films direction and storytelling are what make it standout. It successfully keeps the audience wondering what is new (what has not happened yet) and what has been "repeated". All in all, this film honestly was the one I was worried would not live up to my VERY high expectations, yet it met every one of them and then some. I was laughing, I was holding my breath, I was biting my nails, I was blow away. As of now, and likely until the end of December, this film is my movie of the year.
It is basically deadly serious, and after some moderate knockaboutfun, settles into something pretty dull. Where's the edge?
The film is based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. When they were both killed in battle, Cage in the invasion of Normandy in France and Vrataski at the battle of Verdun, both were severely injured. Both had killed an "Alpha" alien mimic and when the Alpha's blood splashed on them and entered any open wounds they had, they gained the same power the Omega mimic had to loop time. Rita tells Cage that she lost her power when she received a blood transfusion while her combat wounds were being treated. She stated that she could sense the Omega and stopped sensing it before she could get to it, signaling an end to her power. Cage and Rita arrive at the Louvre, where they share a kiss, and then Rita lures the Alpha away while Cage dives into the pool with a belt of grenades. Though Cage is fatally injured, the grenades detonate, and the Omega is killed. However, the Omega's blood seeps into Cage's body. Cage wakes in the helicopter on his way to General Brigham's office, before he tried to blackmail the General. News arrives that there was an unexplained energy pulse detected in Paris and that the Mimics seem to have lost their ability to fight, implying that the Omega has been destroyed despite Cage's last time jump. Cage visits Vrataski who, from her point of view, is meeting him for the first time. Cage grins. That song is called "Love Me Again" by John Newman. a5c7b9f00b
