A fast moving, star studded, roller coaster ride of violence, madness and mayhem in this gritty British crime film. Bulla is the 'Big Fat Gypsy Gangster, 'labeled 'the most dangerous man in Britain'. After serving sixteen years at her majesty's pleasure Bulla is out on the streets again, but things start to go wrong from the moment he steps out when he finds out he's lost everything on the outside world. Fleeced by the same corrupt copper that put him behind bars, even his favourite 'Aunt Queenie' is about to lose the roof from over her head; in Bulla's world family is everything. It's time for Bulla to fight back Get ready for a white knuckle ride into London's underworld as the most dangerous man in Britain sets about reclaiming his crime empire.
Ricky Grover, star of the phenomenal Johnny Vaughan scripted sitcom, 'Orrible, is back in a feature length film focusing on his Gangster creation, Bulla. Here, he both stars as the titular character, co-writes the screenplay (along with his wife, Maria Grover) and makes his feature length directorial debut...and what a debut it is!
Bulla has just been released from HMP Broadmarsh after a 16 year stretch in the clink, after which he finds out that all his old haunts, including his Auntie's (Laila Morse) Pub, have been bought out by the bent, and now best-selling author ex-copper, Mason (Eddie Webber) - the very same bent ex-copper who put him inside in the first place!
Whilst being followed by an American documentary film maker (Joshua Lou Friedman), Bulla and his entourage, including his left and right hand men - Roland and Geoff (Roland Manookian, Geoff Bell), midget driver / bare-knuckle fighter - Major (Maxwell Laird) and his "Financial Adviser" Jik Jickels (Omid Djalili), Bulla goes on a rip-roaring ride through his old stomping ground trying to get the money to save his "Manor".
Right from the off, the film grabs you by the naughty bits and doesn't let go. If you've been looking for a Brit-com that mirrors the likes of Love Actually or Billy Elliott - look elsewhere. This is loud 'n' proud, brash, foul-mouthed, hyperactive craziness to the Nth degree...Just like Bulla himself!
The film uses a couple of tried 'n' true elements such as the 'Mocumentary' style - used to good effect in things like the BBC2 series Operation Good Guys and the US comedy Dog Bites Man - and the modern British gangster feel encapsulated in things like Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.
Fast paced, with trip-hammer editing - it never lets up. It's truly an assault on the senses. The little cut-aways to the stocking-wearing Bulla, talking to camera, are another nice touch that really gives it zing.
And if you're thinking of creating a drinking game where you have a shot of whisky every time a recognisable face makes an appearance - please don't, you'll die from alcohol poisoning! Everybody and their dog takes a turn: Celeb Psychic - Derek Acorah, stand up and panel show regular - Rufus Hound, N-Dubz' Tulisa, and the Beverly Hills Cop bad guy himself - Steven Berkoff, are just a few of the familiar faces you'll spot.
In spite of the major star power involved - this is still Grover's show, he oozes charisma and likability from every pore and is funny, scary and captivating to watch.
Now, after all that, this reviewer needs a nice cup o' tea...2 sugars!!!
It seems like this film is getting a lot of flack from critics, so thought I'd come on here and set the record straight.
If you want a film that is deep, thought provoking, post-modern and reflective of British Cinema; don't bother. If however, you want 90 minutes of laughter and chaos then this is the film for you.
With a stellar cast and amazing music soundtrack, Big Fat Gypsy Gangster has given comedy a kick up the backside and finally provided us with a film that is funny. None of this laughing under your breath maybe once or twice in the whole film, this will have you in stitches throughout.
I wish some of these critics would give this comedy credit for what it actually is: a really funny film. The makers have made something that's hilarious, so there's no need to over analyse it.
I can't think of one film in recent years that has made me laugh like this one. Yes, there are flaws in the script and blah blah blah but to put it simply, this is a gangster comedy and Big Fat Gypsy Gangster does what it says on the tin! Job Done.
