A new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.
Nobby Graves is a working class man, with a wife and several kids, living in Grimsby. His brother, Sebastian, went missing 28 years ago and he hasn't seen him since. Little does he know that Sebastian is now a secret agent with MI6. Sebastian is currently working on foiling an attempt by a terrorist organisation to disrupt a prestigious event and kill a famous actress and social activist. Nobby goes to the event to meet Sebastian but hinders Sebastian's operation, making Sebastian look like the perpetrator of a terrorist act. Trying to track down the actual terrorists while on the run from the law, the two brothers now need to rely on each other more than ever.
Grimsby has to be the best comedy about a northern football hooligan who seeks out his long lost MI6 secret agent brother.... Where this idea came from I have no clue but it has the making for a fun movie.
God the movie was funny. There is one thing a comedy has to do, and that is to be funny. Grimsby is classic Sasha Baron Cohen, everything you would expect from him, and in my opinion, it hasn't gotten old yet as he still successfully delivers on the crude, controversial (sometimes offencive) and shocking humour he is known for. If you are fan of Sasha Baron Cohen films then you will enjoy this one for sure.
But, if you are going to look at this film more in depth, then there are many critiques to be made. Firstly the story. The underlying story was a basic spy, end of the world plot with cliché's such as accidents that come in handy, deus ex machina and other such moments that make little sense other than for the convenience of plot development. But then again this is Sasha baron Cohen movie where he and Mark Strong get ejaculated on my a conga line of elephants while inside an elephants vagina.... So yeah. Logical plot - nill, hilarity - 1
Overall Grimsby is a funny film, Or at least was funny to me. I know that humour depends on taste, so if you enjoy Sasha Baron Cohen or the type of humour he is associated with then this film should be right up your alley. It's a comedy, and at the end of the day comedies need to be funny. So to me, Grimsby was a good film as it did the job it needed to do, and it did it well.
'THE BROTHERS GRIMSBY': Three Stars (Out of Five)
A spy action-comedy flick, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong; as a super spy and his hooligan brother. The two are forced to team together, for an important deadly mission, after being separated for 28-years. Cohen also co-wrote the movie (with Phil Johnston and Peter Baynham) and it was directed by Louis Leterrier (who's previously helmed other action flicks; like 'THE INCREDIBLE HULK', 'CLASH OF THE TITANS' and the first two 'TRANSPORTER' movies). The film costars Penelope Cruz, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, Ian McShane and Scott Adkins. It got dismal reviews from critics, and performed very poorly at the Box Office. I thought very little of it as well, but it does have decent action scenes.
Nobby (Cohen) and Sebastian (Strong) are brothers who were inseparable as children, until their parents died. Nobby grew up an alcoholic football fan, in Grimsby, and Sebastian became one of MI6's top spies. They haven't seen each other in 28-years, and Nobby desperately longs to see his lost brother again. That all changes when Nobby learns Sebastian will be at a local fundraiser. Nobby's attempt to reunite with his brother, puts the whole world in danger though (because he's a complete idiot).
Like Cohen's other films, the movie is extremely crude and grotesque. I don't have a moral objection to movies like this, but sometimes it's too much for my liking. This one is a little too gross, for me to enjoy that much, I also just didn't find it to be that funny (although parts of it are). Strong is awesome in the film though! It's great to see him as a lead, in a comedy flick too, and he and Cohen together are humorous. The material isn't that funny beyond that though, but the action scenes are cool.

Nobby is hardly a character for the ages. He's a basic fool. The movie, too, is chaotic and crude. But its lack of sophistication, like its odd mix of souped-up action and base comedy, ultimately feels like a badge of honour.
