Book descriptionThe introducing series yet again fails to produce an exemplary introductory text. This book had so much potential, but unfortunately - as is the case in almost all introducing books Ive read - the material is tainted with ideological bias. The horrors of the Holocaust are very accurately depicted and the modernized/industrialized aspects of this genocide are equally portrayed with vivid detail, but many socio-economic and cultural aspects of this tragedy are ignored. I am also at a complete loss as to why Zionism is demonized and the Germans are not. It is absurd to ignore the cultural links between early 20th century Germany and the Nazi ideology- yet that is also ignored. This volume does not focus on the individual stories of the Jews or the Nazis (as I think it sometime should) which is a minor failure. In terms of general understanding I think it succeeds in painting an accurate picture of what happened between 1939-1945. I could not help but feel like people with a certain ideological bend wrote this in order to use the Holocaust to serve their purposes - be it political or cultural. The blurb about Zionism at the end is clearly politically motivated and far from objective or true. In terms of the Holocaust, however, this book is solid with its facts and can be used as a reliable reference in pointing towards specific historical events.
