SPOILER: Orphan Black follows outsider, orphan and street-wise chameleon Sarah. After witnessing a woman's suicide, Sarah assumes the stranger's identity - who happens to look just like her. Expecting to solve all her problems by cleaning out the dead woman's savings, Sarah is instead thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery as she realizes the dizzying truth - she and the dead woman are clones. As Sarah searches for answers, she discovers the chilling fact that there are more people like her out there - genetically identical individuals who were planted in unsuspecting birth parents and nurtured in completely different circumstances. With no idea who created the clones, she'll need to discover the reason in a hurry as an assassin is killing them one by one.
A streetwise hustler is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her.
Heard about this from a gay man who is sick of gay personal ads looking for men who are "straight acting". To each his own. I guess this author is not for them, huh? Being upfront saved all some time.
A reporter told Jordan Gavaris if he were gay, he'd be offended by Jordan's portrayal of Felix. Jordan said all gays are not the same, not like on Modern Family - wonderful career, kids. (Although, we are talking about a show called "Modern FAMILY".) Jordan said Felix' flamboyancy is 'cuz he's an artist and he is multifaceted, not just gay.
And I'd have to ask if either the reporter or Jordan have ever known any gay men because Felix is like a whole lot of gays. To the reporter, I doubt flamboyant, flaming, queeny types would really take offense to Felix. And to Jordan, well, many gay men act that way just because they are gay, not because they are artists, which they all aren't. And all artists are not flamboyant. So, if you don't like that applied to gays, then don't pass a flamboyancy stereotype from gays to artists.
But, I do love the message that Jordan is putting out about gays being multifaceted and are not just gay. Also, Cosima told Rachel she has more interesting parts than her gender preference. I love these messages. But it's really not straight people who so desperately need to hear these messages, but gays themselves. Many gays almost introduce themselves as gay, even before giving a name.
And... to do with self-identity... many human Earthlings equate "life purpose" to how they make money. Conditioned souls.
The first season of Orphan Black was captivating. It wasn't perfect, but it was at least interesting and engaging. Still, it had its flaws. Accents, for one thing. They were way off and distracting.
Then there were glaring illogical sequences that were simply not believable, like Art not realizing Sarah wasn't Beth, among others.
Then there were the way-over-the-top characters, like Fee. (It's sad to see such stereotypical misrepresentations of homosexuals in the 21st century. Of course there are flamers, but they represent only a small percentage of male homosexuals. And ironically, when Fee and Donnie go to the clinic as a homosexual couple Fee admonishes Donnie for acting too flamboyant. He goes so far as to tell Donnie that 10% of males are homosexual and Donnie doesn't see that because they blend in so seamlessly. What does that say about Fee's character then?)
In fact, almost ALL of the characters were over the top. So as much as I liked Helena, she was always over the top. So was Allison in her yuppiness. So was Sarah, etc. So was Cosima. So was Rachel. About the only character who was real was Beth Childs, and she was gone after season 1.
And therein lies the rub. This show is so dumbed down with its one dimensional characters and gaping plot holes that the original concept (eugenics is bad) gets lost in the sauce.
It got to the point that I did a 180 on my appreciation of Tatiana's acting skills. By the end I hated all of her characterizations. Yes, it took skill on her part to do all the different roles, but not a single role possessed one iota of subtlety, and an actress that can't portray subtlety is not a very good actress.
Further dumbing down the show is the weak writing and directing. Bringing back some character from the dead (i.e. Helena) is bad enough. But to keep doing it over and over, right up to the "back from the dead" Susan Duncan, is inexcusable. And compounding the issue is the editing. Things just jump from one scene to the next with no coherence whatsoever. It's not art or cool or cutting edge; it's just lazy writing and directing.
But the biggest issue is this: When you pack a show with one loathsome character after another, the show itself becomes loathsome. And make no mistake about it; this show is filled with some of the most loathsome characters in TV history. But there just isn't enough goodness in the lead characters/protagonists to offset that. As a result the show implodes and caves in due to the imbalance. And it's not that I don't like or appreciate dark protagonists; I do. But this show rips off its audience time and time again by opting for shock value over quality story telling, and that's the last straw.
By the final season I just wanted the show to be over. I watched every episode but really regretted it. This show could have been a 10. In the end, I grudgingly gave it a 5.
Mrs. S: "You know, undocumented, outside the system."
It can also refer to the fact that the clone project to which all of them belong to is considered an 'orphan'. Leekie explained in Season 2 that the research, files and documentation that held all of the genetic history of the clones was lost during a fire. Hence, the project became an Orphan (a product without the steps that it took to be built).
(Quote)
Leekie: Twenty years ago, there was a fire in one of our labs. Several scientists died, reams of data lost, and the original genome was destroyed.
Cosima: So all of this secrecy around the original genome is because it doesn't exist?
Leekie: Yes. The entire project is essentially an orphan. We lost your prehistory, Cosima, and, with it, all record of several synthetic sequences embedded in your DNA. Most of the Project Leda clones, such as Sarah, Alison, and Helena, are heterosexual. But Cosima is gay. Some fans are confused by this since all the clones share identical DNA. However, sexual orientation is not determined by simple genetics. This can be seen in the fact that identical twins, who share the exact same DNA, do not necessarily have the same sexual orientation. Instead, sexuality seems to be the result of complex "epigenetics" where certain genes are "switched" on or off during fetal development. While all the sisters share DNA, they were carried by different mothers and so would show subtle deviations. a5c7b9f00b
