Manual mode is one of the main settings on your camera, and it lets you manually control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. The auto modes (Auto, Program), and semi automatic modes (Aperture Priority, and Shutter Priority) on your camera are great places to start.
In this photography basics lesson, I teach the difference between manual mode, aperture priority, and shutter priority on your DSLR camera.
22 Oct 2015 There are no real surprises once you've truly mastered manual mode, as you'll have full control of the three major points of the exposure triangle aperture, it helps to set your aperture (also known as f-stop) and can basically be thought of as a means of adjusting the amount of your picture that is in focus.
Manual-enabled modes give the photographer control over the various parameters of an exposure. A or Av: Aperture priority or Aperture value enables manual control of the aperture, and shutter speed is calculated by the camera for proper exposure (given an ISO sensitivity).

This mode is really a semi-automatic (or semi-manual) mode where you choose the aperture and where your camera chooses the other settings (shutter speed, white balance, ISO etc) This means you'll have a larger depth of field (more of the scene will be in focus) but that your camera will choose a slower shutter speed.
