Instructions may read: Ch 8, join with a slip stitch to form a ring. To do this, you will make a slip knot on the hook as usual, then make 8 chs, then insert the hook into the first chain made, hook the yarn and draw it through the first chain and through the loop on the hook (See Figure 6).

Alternatively, you can work in joined rounds, whereby the beginning of each round is raised with a chain, so the last stitch of the round ends up at the same level as the first stitch at the start of the round. The end of the round is joined to the start of the round with a slip stitch. The latter approach is what this tutorial is about.
Then you would take the chain stitches and gently form them into a ring; to close the ring, you would crochet your slip stitch into the very first chain stitch you worked in the beginning. View C. shows my crochet hook pointing to the spot you would insert your hook to work the slip stitch. View D shows my crochet hook inserted
We will begin by chaining 6. Next, you will insert the crochet hook through the first chain you made which is next to the slip knot (see illustration 51). Yarn over and draw it through the chain and through the loop on hook; you have now joined six chains into a circle or a ring.
