Cage-busting leaders is able to identify problems that are not always the most obvious. They take a look at the school as a whole and see where there is room for improvement, identify the problem and ambitiously set goal in order to solve the problem. A leader of a school should not be satisfied with performance because it meets policy requirements. He or she should not be satisfied until performance is at 100%. For example, if a school has 75% of students fluent in a foreign language and policy states they should be at 60%, a cage-busting leader will still look for areas of growth and aim to achieve 100%. Today’s leaders seem to have an idea that money is needed in order to create change and continue to grow as a school, however, this is a false way of thinking. A cage-busting leader is able to optimize results with less. They are able to take the current resources they have and restructure teachers, programs and students in order to make the goal or solution to the problem more obtainable. Many businesses have started with nothing and have achieved greatness. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a wonderful example. He had many competitors and began out of his dorm room to create an empire. A cage-busting school leader will look at the school programs, structure of teachers and faculty, transportation and other areas where the budget is being thrown. This will allow them to use their budgets wisely however, if money is still lacking, it is a leaders job to think outside of the box and create a new path to achieve a goal. Success is not always going to be easy or within arms reach is takes a great deal of collaboration, creativity, brainstorming and rethinking which can be difficult for one person to do. It is important that a leader utilize other people to help him or her identify and solve problems. Educators think in similar patterns and tend to get caught up in certain areas. It is important to bring in other areas of expertise, they seem to have more of a birds-eye-view at the situation. These diverse culture can help to identify problems and create a solution that a person within education may be blind to. In addition to the above people, it is important that leaders have a good legal team on their side. A cage-busting leader thinks outside the box or policies in order to gain success. Sometimes they have to take a policy for its words and get around it but seeking legal help at this time is important. By surrounding themselves with diverse areas of expertise and leading educators, a cage-busting leader creates a dynamic team and culture. Once a problem has been identified, it is important that a cage-busting leader set ambitious goals and track progress is order to measure growth. A cage-busting leader will do what is necessary in order to achieve goals. A cage-busting leader is not always liked by all but needs to do what is necessary to gain achievement. If it is getting rid of marginal teachers that have been coached without success in order to bring in better teachers, he or she will do it. If it is getting rid of programs that are not working, he or she will do it. If it is putting into place new programs, he or she will do it. It is important that the leader rewards and celebrates where it is necessary and coaches or strategizes in other areas. If a leader is not willing to go outside their comfort zone and put up a fight for things they believe will create change, he or she may need to rethink his or her role. Effective, cage-busting leaders are able to problem-solve and think outside the box, create goal relevant to the achievement and bettering of his or her school and create a culture that is able to plan for goal achievement. He or she is willing to listen to others and implement plans to better the school. It is important that a leader have confidence in his or her team as well as himself or herself in order to get the job done efficiently.
