Book descriptionThe story itself was great. I have a thing for fairy tales and folk lore retellings, and this one had a unique twist to the usual Beauty and the Beast story line. Nothing was quite what it seemed to be throughout the book, giving a near-perfect amount of tension that had me reading as fast as I could to turn the page and find out what was coming next. The ending was happily ever after, and while predictable, it made me happy for the characters to get the happy ending. There is a lot of emotions with the characters, much more so than usually given to the secondary characters, Parts had me giggling, usually when she was talking with and describing the interactions with the house staff, and others disgusted at the actions taken by the villain. Its not a book Id read in several sittings, since Id be too distracted to focus on anything until it was finished, so no lunch time reading for this one. The length was good, not so long that it was daunting to read and not so short that I could read it in one evening. There were a few things that kept me from the four to five star rating I wanted to give it: there was not enough effort in editing. The writing is good enough for me to ignore the mistakes, but they glared out at me enough that I got irritated at first. Id hazard that this is the authors first published book, and that if self-published, they didnt have access to a professional editor. I wont begrudge an author for that, though I do hope the next book has fewer editing misses. As much as I liked the main character, she was lacking in true depth and jumped around in thought, emotion and action a bit too much. Its like the author was writing her as two different people and kept switching which one she was writing her character as. Her speech patterns kept changing, making me wonder if she was bi-polar or had multiple personalities. Some parts of the back story for Rose felt like it was simply thrown in last minute with no previous mention or foreshadowing. Making those parts fit better into the earlier parts of the book as well as the ending would have solidified the story a bit more. Im in no way sorry to have paid for this book since I enjoyed it and will re-read it in the future. Totally worth the price I paid.
