An American journalist on assignment in the Australian outback encounters a man-eating crocodile while trapped on a rapidly flooding mud island.
An idyllic wildlife cruise disintegrates into terror when a party of tourists are stalked by a massive man-eating crocodile. Pete McKell, a cynical American travel writer, joins a disparate group of holiday-makers on a river cruise through the waters of Kakadu National Park. Initially Pete clashes with their tour captain, Kate, a feisty young woman who assumes he is just another 'city-slicker' in search of a quick thrill. After an uneventful day cruising the river, Kate is reluctantly persuaded to steer their boat into unexplored territory. They discover a secluded lake but terror strikes when their craft receives a powerful blow from beneath the murky depths and begins to sink. With little choice, she beaches the vessel on the closest dry land -a tiny mud island. With a rising tide and only half an hour of daylight left, fear grips the group as they realize they are trapped in the lair of a 'rogue' crocodile, governed only by its need to hunt and kill. Begrudgingly, Pete and Kate join forces to keep hysteria at bay and in the process start to see beyond their initial impressions. Their first attempt to escape fails, but then Pete has an idea - they must trap the crocodile to enable the group to flee to the other side of the island whilst Kate swims for help. Pete volunteers to stand guard, but without warning, the beast breaks free and targets Kate who fails to resurface. As darkness descends and the muddy waters rise, a terrifying struggle ensues with only one probable outcome death.
I don't think Greg McClean wanted to make a monster movie. I think he wanted to make a movie about the Australian landscape and I wish he'd gone with that rather than this half-hearted effort about a monster crocodile, because this is a very well shot and technically polished movie.
However, if you've ever seen any creature-themed horror movie, the story will have very little in the way of surprise and therefore suspense.
The plot is the well-trodden path of a group of people trapped in a bad situation and being picked off one by one by the titular monster, whilst the survivors attempt to devise strategies to escape.
Some small spikes of interest show, such as a dilemma about what to use for bait to divert the monster and the arrival of a pair of colourful locals but I wish more was made about the creature's capacity for savagery, cunning and malice so that we as an audience could really fear and marvel at it.
Hints are dropped but they aren't really enough to enlarge the status of the creature beyond just a very large, aggressive crocodile. Whilst impressive, it doesn't ever really come across as terribly scary or evil. Fans of horror want their pound of flesh - we certainly got that in Greg's last film. I just wondered why he left it out of this one.
Too much time is spent focusing on the tourists and their trip and while setting up the protagonists is important, in the end I still didn't care if they were all eaten or not. Not really a sympathetic or vulnerable character in the lot. Neither is there much of an attempt at making any chemistry between the two leads.
The focus of the film therefore seems to be the landscape. The characters and the creature can't really compete.
I didn't expect much from the beginning from all the other movies I've seen with basically the same theme. What made this movie better then those was the believable story. Something like this is more likely to happen then say "Jurassic Park" or "Anaconda". The graphics were also a lot better then I've seen with other movies of the same caliber. The computer animation blended well into the live action which gave it a more true to life feel. The acting wasn't bad. The killing scenes could of been better for an R rated movie. I was expecting much more gore. The first like 3 kills they didn't even show what happened. No blood no anything. It was very disappointing. Still it wasn't a bad movie.
On the DVD extras menu Greg McLean says that the film was inspired by stories of a large crocodile that had attacked people in the Northern Territories. The story and characters however have all been made up specifically for the film Surprisingly, the Unrated Version does not feature any more unrated-worthy material than the usual R-Rated version. One can speculate that the Unrated Version is the original Australian Version whereas the R-Rated Version was created especially for the US market and therefore several plotscenes were left out. Those scenes are featured in the Unrated aka. Australian Version. a5c7b9f00b
