A Tribute to Margie Abeyta, A Cuentos del Puerto de Luna Special Edition, is being written as my special tribute to my paternal prima hermana, first cousin, Margie Abeyta. Because she was six years older than me, Margie was like an older sister or a young aunt. She was reared in the Puerto de Luna home where I was born in 1946, the home of my father's dad, Abuelo Cipriano Flores. My dad always referred to my abuelo as mi papá (which sounded like empapá to us). Mi papá or empapá means "my dad" in English. A Tribute to Margie Abeyta also includes history and lore about Puerto de Luna. Puerto de Luna is the village on the banks of the Pecos river that was settled in 1862. Its major claim to fame is the historic visit to the area in the mid-sixteenth century by the Spanish conquistador, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, who passed through while searching for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola. He is said to have built a bridge of logs to cross the Pecos river. Another claim to fame is that the famed or infamous Billy the Kid is known to have frequented the area in the late 1870s and early 1880s. He is said to have eaten his last Christmas meal in Puerto de Luna on December 25, 1880. He was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett at nearby Fort Sumner of July 14, 1881. I have many fond memories of my childhood in Puerto de Luna. I lived there from my birth until October 1959 when my family moved to Santa Rosa. Margie was always being called to help my dad's family whenever my mom was ill or was having a baby. And my parents had lots of babies! I am the oldest of thirteen and there was a fourteenth who was still-born. Margie certainly did a lot of babysitting in the Flores family as she also helped with my Uncle Meno's family and they had eight children as well as with my Uncle Victor's family, he only had two.
