In Gotham City, the Riddler has secret information on the top secret Task Force X that he threatens to make public, but before Amanda Waller can have him killed, he is captured by Batman. Now with Riddler imprisoned in Arkham Asylum, Amanda Waller reassembles the Suicide Squad of captured supervillains with the mission to infiltrate the forensic mental hospital to retrieve Riddler's information. Led by Deadshot, this black ops team makes their way into the facility, only to face complications from within and without the team with secret agendas and double crosses all around. Meanwhile, Batman has his own concerns with an urgent search for The Joker's deadly bomb that threatens Gotham City. Eventually, all these players converge on Arkham Asylum for a showdown that few are going to escape alive.
Batman works desperately to find a bomb planted by the Joker while Amanda Waller hires her newly formed Suicide Squad to break into Arkham Asylum to recover vital information stolen by the Riddler.
I won't go into plot as I'm sure others can do so better than I can, but this looks, sounds and feels like a movie.
Technically, the sound mixing is great. As is the Foley. The voice casting spot on, the humor, terrific and the ensemble cast, spot perfect.
Batman isn't in it as much as you would think, but you hardly notice. The list of villains (which are SUPERBLY introduced) is more than enough to hold your attention. They are not brain-dead villains, but each of them (7 or 8, I think) has their own feel and motivation.
Fight scenes are well choreographed/storyboarded (not sure what the jargon is with animation) and leave nothing wanting.
Loved this. If they keep making them this good, I'll keep buying and renting.
'Batman: Assault On Arkham (2014)' is the movie that 'Suicide Squad (2016)' should have been. Seeing it through the lens of a world which has now experienced the unfortunate attempt at a live-action incarnation of these characters makes you appreciate this piece even more. It's a unique approach, to focus on someone other than Batman in a feature named after him, more so when they are technically the villains. It's actually a bit of a shame that this wasn't pushed further, having the piece wholly from the perspective of the squad without the 'caped crusader' or with him as an antagonist instead of the strange half-and-half we get here, seemingly only because it is the 'dark knight' who has his name in the title and the star power to sell the picture. Yet, the balance is struck pretty well and our expectations are played with in a few fairly clever ways. Animation wise, the feature is crisp, fluid and aesthetically pleasing. It looks like proper effort was put into every frame - unlike some more recent efforts - and it all comes across as convincing, from the bigger action moments to the smaller character stuff. The voice-work sells a decent script which crafts some great, empathetic and suitably gritty characterisations. The flick is also pretty dark, too, with the stakes set early on and the tension maintained throughout. We care about the bad-guys and that's commendable considering they're properly bad, at times. Overall, it's an interesting, entertaining and unique film that draws you in with its premise and keeps you there with its execution. 7/10
Yes. It is meant to serve as a sequel to Arkham Origins, the game released before the video, and a prequel to Arkham Asylum, the first in the series. The producers were given access to the character and location models from the game in order to design the movie. They worked with the creators of the game to ensure continuity with the series, so they knew which characters they could use and kill without interfering with the future of the game series. a5c7b9f00b
