During World War II, a brave, patriotic American Soldier undergoes experiments to become a new supersoldier, "Captain America." Racing to Germany to sabotage the rockets of Nazi baddie "Red Skull", Captain America winds up frozen until the 1990s. He reawakens to find that the Red Skull has changed identities and is now planning to kidnap the President of the United States.
Frozen in the ice for decades, Captain America is freed to battle against arch-criminal, The Red Skull.
I have heard before that sometimes studios must force release a film in order to keep the rights in their name. I heard this was done also for a very low budget Fantastic Four flick in the early nineties and I firmly believe that this iteration of Captain America was done for the same reason. The budget for this film was next to nothing and that is proved by every shot, every costume and every scene. I mean I can handle low budget and I love a good super hero flick but this is downright terrible. This would be barely watchable in the seventies on Television it was that bad. The performances are ridiculously shallow and cheesy and I think I could take four pages to talk about just how bad Captain America's outfit was. I mean he hardly uses the costume but for good reason because he looks ridiculous. I've heard people complain about the new (2011) costume which is more soldier than Super Hero but anything has to be better than the pair of pajamas that is worn in this film. The story is simplistic with action scenes equivalent to kids playing in their front yard with cap guns. I suppose the one thing I can say is that when Cap uses his shield there is some acceptable special effects except for the horrible sound effects when the shield is flying.
B-Movie character actor Matt Salinger seems to be the perfect fit for a forced movie about Captain America. Supposedly the likes Val Kilmer, and Arnold Schwarzenegger were considered for the role and I don't believe that for a second given they both had solid action careers at this point in their career. Salinger is vapid and empty in his role but does show some typical Captain America type patriotism in his role. He looks like he's really trying hard to be A+ but I don't think Salinger could ever do anything above a B movie. Surprisingly the whole cast is not a write off. Legendary actor, and singer Ronny Cox plays the President of The United States and perhaps is one of two redeemable performances in the film that brings this from a big fat zero to a 1.5 type film. Cox tries his best amidst a terrible script and even worse acting. The same could be said for the unfortunately small role by Oscar and Emmy nominated Ned Beatty who plays a hungry reporter looking for the story on Captain America. His role and performance might have even lifted this entire film out of the toilet but he is killed off before he is even given a chance. Unfortunate that his role was small but even more unfortunate that he somehow ended up in this trash. Scott Paulin is the ridiculously poorly done villain The Red Skull. His character as the main foe is so bad that they also gave Paulin the role as a random Army doctor early in the film. Get the most out of their cast? Red Skull is ridiculously pointless in the film and would make great villains like Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson's Joker, or X-Men's Magneto look like gods amongst men. They might as well have had Captain America fight a stuffed pink bunny.
Director Albert Pyun is described as being bizarre and creative and I think that he is in the same boat as the 'amazingly bizarre and creative' Uwe Boll. Pyun has done some real crap and most of them solid B pictures that most people cringe to watch. This certainly fits right into his repertoire of pictures. Four instalments of some sci-fi flick called Nemesis, Kickboxer 4, and Brain Smasher...A Love Story...yep sounds like a real class act. I pray for the sake of the property that is Captain America that this was truly an excuse for the studio to keep the rights because if they actually made this with sincere intentions it is a miracle that super hero flicks still exist. The film is boring, contrived and barely does anything for Captain America. A lot of IMDb reviewers say that this is only for true Captain America fans and I say the complete opposite...this film is a scar on anyone who likes Captain America. Sure they give him the right colours, the back story of being frozen in ice and the red skull but they did it like children playing in a school yard. Don't even bother with this crap. This film just made my expectations for the new film significantly lower because anything is better than this. 1.5/10
Matt Salinger stars as Captain America, the super soldier from the 1944 comics that was popular because of WW2, however the 1991 revival brings Captain America out of suspended animation, to face off against his old foe the Red Skull. Captain America is really lame for a couple of reasons. 1)If Red Skull has dominated the market of the world for so many years, why is it not so bad. 2)If Captain America is so heroic, how come he gets his ass kicked so many times? 3)Is it necessary to provide exhausted fish out of water jokes? I have no idea of the answer, however Captain America is a bomb. What is most interesting is that there is little heroic activity going on. Many people dislike The Punisher made in 1989 (It's my personal guilty pleasure) but at least there Dolph Lundgren always came off as a guy you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. So did Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton in the Superman and Batman movies. In Matt Salinger though, one gets the impression that he belongs doing gymnastics instead of giving out the old fashioned passionate ass beatings that the role requires. Also the movie is awkwardly directed by Albert Pyun, who directed Cyborg, Kickboxer 2, Bloodmatch and Kickboxer 4. I think right there explains the problem, wonder needs to be given to the concept of a superhero. He's not like some kickboxer who aimlessly wanders through life until forced in battle, Captain America needs to explode into action and deliver a hero worthy of excellence. Captain America would be bearable if the action sequences were any good but without surprisingly Pyun mishandles these guaranteeing that Captain America comes up super lame.

On Disc 2, this already seems to have happened which means it contains the actual Director's Cut: the image quality still sucks but it was at least improved a bit. As a result, some scenes look much better than they do on the first disc. The same goes for the introductory text box in the beginning. The two spelling mistakes from the Commentary Version on disc 1 have been corrected. A further introductory text is only available in this edited version. But more than that (and the actual reason for this comparison), there's an 11-minute-block of scenes in the middle of the movie which is missing in the Commentary Version on disc 1. This means, the entire footage exclusively in the Director's Cut is withheld because the differences in the beginning and end is nothing but recycled footage. a5c7b9f00b
