It's possible to register a better detector, like for example Apache Tika, see Transparently improve Java 7 mime-type recognition with Apache Tika. For example, you can parse a PDF or DOC to extract the text and the metadata very easily. import java.io.File; import java.io.FileInputStream; import org.apache.tika.metadata.
4 Jan 2018 Two primary MIME types are important for the role of default types: text/plain is the default value for textual files. A textual file should be human-readable and must not contain binary data. application/octet-stream is the default value for all other cases. An unknown file type should use this type.
It's possible to have a servletW serve up PDF content by specifying the content type of the servlet response to be the 'application/pdf' MIME type via response.setContentType("application/pdf"). This tutorial will demonstrate this using a project with the following structure. 'test' project. The TestServlet class is mapped to /test.
I'm trying to save an attached pdf file from a message. But I should save it only after confirming that it is a pdf file. For that, I'm checking th.

MimetypesFileTypeMap (comes as part of Java6, can be downloaded for prior version). It has a method that I've never tried using it myself, though, and it's possible you'll still need to supply it with a list of mime types. Worth a look getContentTypeFor(string) works for txt, pdf, avi; fails for doc, odt, mp3.
Chapter 8 MIME Types. The MIME types file in the config directory contains mappings between the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) types and file extensions. For example, the MIME types file maps the extensions .html and .htm to the type text/html: type="text"/html exts="htm",html. When the Web Server receives a

The following should help: import javax.activation.*; public class ShowMimeType { public static void main(String[] args) { FileDataSource ds = new FileDataSource(args[0]); String contentType = ds.getContentType(); System.out.println("The MIME type of the file
However, as suggested by the comment above, the built-in table of mime-types is quite limited, not including, for example, MSWord and PDF. So, if you want to generalize, you'll need to go beyond the built-in libraries, using, e.g., Mime-Util (which is a great library, using both file extension and content).
