Nedan följer Warhammer 40K-fluff. Be nerdy, or beware.
They tell of a Guardsman, a recruit of a long Guard tradition, who encountered a Space Marine near the front on some desolate battlefield. The Guardsman said "My Lord, 'tis a great honour. I am humbled in your presence. My grandfather's grandfather, and beyond him his grandfather's grandfather, some two centuries past, met one of your Brothers." The Space Marine gazed upon him with his baleful countenance, and said only this: "Name?". The Guardsman gave him his name, and the Space Marine spoke once more. "That Brother was me. Aye, I remember him. You have his features, and his bearing." The Guardsman was stunned. The Marine gestured with his great armoured fist, and said "Yonder is a Brother of mine, a Captain. He has served twelve centuries at least. He remembers when your world was recaptured." Again, the Guardsman was stunned, and he paled. The Marine gestured again, as the skies were rent asunder by the might gunships of the chapter, and the artillery of the Guard rained across the landscape. "Among those mighty warriors is a Dreadnaught, a Brother of mine. He serves from his sarcophagus now, and has done so for millennia. He remembers when your world was first touched by the Emperor". The Guardsman was frozen.
Five endings for this story are given.
In the first, the Guardsman finally speaks - "I had believed, but to know..." and his Commissar shoots him, for Faith should have been enough.
In the second, the Guardsman finally speaks - "I had believed, but to know..." and his Commissar shoots him for he had learned too much. As a precaution, the rest of his family were eliminated, and struck from the records.
In the third, the Guardsman is still, until an unexploded shell lands between them. Without hesitation, the Guardsman throws himself upon it, muffling the detonation. The Space Marine, unhurt due to this sacrifice, takes his dog-tags, and returns to the armies' headquarters. He hands them to an auxiliary, who exclaims "Only sent to the front today! What a waste!". His Commissar shoots him, for the Guardsman died in service of the Emperor.
In the fourth, the Guardsman is again still, and again throws himself upon the shell, and the auxiliary exclaims again, and is shot again by the Commissar, for the auxiliary spoke without permission in the presence of a Space Marine.
In the fifth, after the fighting is done, the Guardsman is returned to his unit, and the Space Marine rejoins his Brothers in battle. Each mentions the incident to his comrades. One of the Guardsmen envies the prowess of the Space Marines, their ageless dedication to the Emperor, their skill, their might. One of the Space Marines envies the Guardsmen their innocence, their blind faith. Both these traitors are shot.
