A teenager girl escapes from a laboratory with the power to dismember people with her multiple invisible arms. On her way out, she gets shot and becomes a double-personality person, half-sweet, half-murderer. On her way, she meets people who have suffered the biggest horrors possible. Together, they will face the evil organization who uses other girls to track the original one.
Two university students come across a seemingly harmless girl named Lucy, unaware that she's actually a mutant serial killer with a split personality.
This anime is awesome. Great story, perfect animation, a little bit of romance, some ecchi stuff, a bit of gore (a LARGE bit of gore), but THIS gore perfectly fit into the story and into the atmosphere of Elfen Lied. The story seems to be a little bit simple for the first look, but when you get further and further into it, you will find out, that you are really caught, and this great piece of art won't release you, until you watch it all. Otherwise, it's really masterful drawn and animated, and the switching between edgy cuteness, and terrible brutality + merciless murdering is great. The main character, Lucy/Nyuu is really great and they have described her emotions, decisions and psychics very well. It's just too awesome to resist!
Nowadays, it is really hard for an anime, or any other form of media, to leave an impression or resonance with its viewers. Thankfully, Elfen Lied manages to capture its viewers' attention with its story, but, noticeably, with its violence and deep, melancholic content.
The big-eyed, cutesy anime look may give the impression that this series is unimpressionable and that it blends with the huge crowd of anime series that are relatively harmless and forgettable (it also doesn't help that some of the central characters look as if they have cat ears, which seem to cater to a lot of anime fans as a form of fan service). As I previously stated, Elfen Lied's story is filled with graphic violence, and a plot that is definitely not for the light of heart.
The story centers on Lucy, a young pink-haired woman, who escapes from a government facility, leaving behind a trail of bloodshed. The reason for Lucy's incarceration is because she is a Diclonius.
The Dicloni are a branch off of the human race that are immediately recognized by the fact they have horns on their heads, that resembles the appearance of cat ears. The Dicloni also have invisible telepathic arms that protrude from their backs called "vectors." Vectors can grab ahold of objects and are strong enough to cut through human flesh. Because of this, the Dicloni have been labeled as threats to the human race. In Lucy's case, she is considered one of the most dangerous because of her sadistic and sociopathic nature.
While escaping, Lucy suffers from a head injury and falls into the sea. The injury causes her to revert to a childlike personality, Nyu. After she washes on the shore of a beach, she meets Kohta and his cousin Yuka. Feeling very sympathetic for the lost and scared Nyu, Kohta takes her in at his family's closed-down restaurant that he now owns and uses as his place of residence, much to Yuka's irritation.
Kohta has suffered tremendously by the fact his father and younger sister were murdered in front of him when he was a child. The event proved so traumatic that he has repressed the memories. He has grown to become a fairly intelligent young man and who is empathic and, at times, overprotective of young girls in trouble, partially due to his guilt of what happened to his sister.
Inevitably, the government has to find Lucy and will go through any means to find and contain her, even at the risk of killing her.
As the series progresses, more characters are introduced, each with their own complex and fleshed-out backstories. The stories intertwine, slowly revealing pieces of the nature of the Dicloni, the mystery of Lucy, her past, how she and Kohta share a past that both of them truly would like to forget and keep forgotten.
As I stated before, Elfen Lied is not for the faint of heart. It introduces themes that may, at times, prove too much as they accumulate and overlap one another. Prejudice, the superiority of race/species, social ostracism, jealously, child molestation, and the value of life are some of the few themes the series explores.
The conclusion of Elfen Lied will affect people differently. Some people will be satisfied with it as it does complete the story (albeit a bit prematurely) and it does bring things to a resolution. However, after realizing that the reason for the series' small 13-episode-length was because the manga was still continuing and its production was fairly slow, I wanted to see how the series would have concluded by the merit of the creator.
The manga does explore the themes deeper and introduces new character. It really can really change your perception of the characters, such as Kohta. Personally, I am divided on the anime's conclusion. I would have liked to see more of it and the story to reach a less premature conclusion, but since it did not have enough time for the themes to expand, the ending does not feel underwhelming (such as the ending of the Gantz anime series).
If you finish the anime and long for a bit more, I recommend reading the manga.
The one thing I will say that may be considered a "negative side effect" of watching and reading Elfen Lied that it might make you slightly misanthropic. However, I do not think it is something one can avoid and it is something one can understandably feel at times.
