Empowered by the love of a slave (Jang), a royal concubine (Cheung) is given the chance to make an extraordinary decision.
An orphaned girl, driven by poverty at such a young age, makes a promise with an enchantress. In return for beauty and the admiration of every man, she will never be with the man she loves. This spell cannot be broken unless the impossible happens: snow falling in spring and the dead coming back to life. Now a grown and beautiful princess, she regrets her promise, for all of the men she's loved has always been met with tragedy. In love again with a man behind a red armor and a golden mask who rescues her from death, she is tormented by their inevitable parting. Meanwhile, Kunlun, the slave of a great general, is searching for the lost memories of a family he once had. Soon the fate of these two intertwine when the princess believes the general to be her hero, thus pulling him into this web of fate. What end will befallen our three characters? Are their fates already sealed by a higher power, or can they still choose a life they want?
THE PROMISE is in my view, a fantasy masterpiece. In fact...in my opinion this is the oriental equivalent to Tolkien'world and work. Let me explain.
Tolkien's work defined the rules for what now is regarded in the West as fantasy by the mainstream public. Tolkien mixed all the western-European classic cultural icons, from legends and literature of old Europe and ended up with a brilliant world where all those Occidental references came together under only one world. A world that later in modern times was used as a base for the popular simple version of Tolkien's formula, which became known as Dungeons&Dragons. D&D became popular and thanks particularly to Hollywood for many people this is what Fantasy is all about with no room for anything else in many peoples minds.
Many people claim to love Fantasy, but in fact what they love is the D&D style ripped-off from Tolkien's original creation. Many people claim to be Fantasy fans, played role-play-games all their lives but never read anything Tolkien wrote because they would have had to go through - "those boring bits" - where - "nothing happened". What many fantasy fans seem to actually enjoy is the Quest structure, the groups of stereotyped heroes taken directly from Tolkien's work, the battle bits and not much else. Many people claim to love Fantasy but think that works like The Neverending Story (the book) are just stories for little kids, otherwise that story would for sure had a group of heroes with a warrior, a dwarf, a wizard an elf...you get the idea...
Which takes me to this amazing movie, THE PROMISE. I can bet, that most people who hated this film are the ones who think, Fantasy movies like Hero or House of Flying Daggers are crap, and Hollywood fast-food like Dungeons&Dragons (the movie) are really cool (true) Fantasy movies. I can bet most people who hated THE PROMISE are the same, who seem to think The Neverending Story is just the title of a movie and that Earthsea is the title of a TV-series which tries to imitate the Harry Potter school of magic and not, actually the Fantasy book which first carried that idea decades ago.
People have to right to dislike anything, what i don't understand in this case are the reasons this movie is so trashed in the reviews posted in this place. All the reasons i've read seem only to comply with the idea that the public that posted them are more popcorn americanized "hollywood" audiences than Fantasy fans at their core. Even if this movie here got bad reviews because not many Fantasy fans actually went to see it, what i can't just understand is how can it be possible not to consider THE PROMISE as first of all GREAT MOVIE MAKING and true CINEMA at it's best. Creative, innovative, not stuck with formulaic conventions, and with a great story, that like Tolkien's best work gets to be inspired in the CLASSIC FANTASY old cultural references from where this beautiful simple story was created.
The only difference is that the story of THE PROMISE is based entirely on ORIENTAL cultural references and Fantasy oriented rules. The fact that most people from the Occident seem to hate the movie looks more like disliking something just because they don't have any references to be amazed by this work, than actually the work having any flaws at all.
Reading the negative reviews here, people only speak of the "bad" graphic look of the movie, the idiotic action scenes which look totally unreal (like if X-Men were more real than this), and about the cgi which look fake. But where's the negative review that dislikes the movie because it's not Cinema ? As a movie i don't think there's a single negative point in this work of art. The graphic look although artificial seems like a beautiful graphic novel, the story is 100% Oriental Fantasy at it's best, as well as the action scenes and the whole work is totally consistent with the new fantasy universe it tries to present.
In my opinion , this is one of the best Fantasy movies ever, right up there with Lord of the Rings. The only difference is this time here, we get ORIENTAL STYLE FANTASY not americanized D&D stuff ripped-off from Tolkien's work.
The cinematography is amazing, the editing is perfect and the whole movie is truly an original Fantasy movie. Just for being something that presented a universe not seen before in this way , deserves to be praised and specially, deserves to be seen and understood.
10 stars out of 10, just because i can't give it more. And yes, i really thing this is even better than Hero. If that is possible.
Part I:
In a war-ravaged land where danger was rampant and food was scare a young girl named Qingcheng fed herself and her mother by pillaging the bodies of dead soldiers. One day, after finding some bread, Qingcheng pulls the boots off a hanging corpse for her own use. However, "the corpse" is not dead and he is able to string up Qingcheng. After Qingcheng promises to be his slave, he cuts her down and she proceeds to ask if she can see his helmet that she uses to smack him on the head before fleeing.
While crossing some water Qingcheng drops her bread, but the bread is caught by a goddess and is brought back to Qingcheng. The goddess asks why Qingcheng does not go ahead and eat the bread and the young girl informs the goddess that she is saving the food for her mother. The goddess then tells the girl that her mother is dead. Grief stricken the girl eats the bread, but before she departs the goddess offers her a chance to live a life in which she will have all the food she wants, will be able to wear the most beautiful clothing, and men will fall helplessly in love with her. However, there is of course a catch. All men whom she falls in love with will die. The girl readily accepts the conditions.
Years later, after a brutal battle in which his regiment of 3,000 men was able to defeat a barbarian horde of 20,000, General Guangming is informed that the King is being attacked by the traitorous Duke of the North Wuhuan. While he and his slave Kunlun, a man of extraordinary strength and speed, search for the path back to the kingdom they become lost and decide to split up to find their way. However, while looking for the path, General Guangming comes across the goddess who informs him that the victory against the barbarians would be his last because soon the man wearing the crimson armor, the armor Guangming wears, would kill the King and his name would be besmirched. Laughing, Guangming states that he would never kill the king.
After the goddess departs, Wuhuan's assassin Snow Wolf attacks Guangming. After the battle, Kunlun finds his master wounded and his master tells him to wear his army and save the king. Kunlun asks how can he tell who is the king and Guangming informs him that the king will be the one without a weapon.
Back at the palace, the King and his princess, Qingcheng, stand upon the top of the palace walls surrounded by Wuhuan's soldiers. Wuhuan demands that the king give him Qingcheng, which the king is all too willing to do. Qingcheng angered by this tells the guards that she will strip off a layer of clothing if they will kill the king. Being that her stunning beauty entrances them, Cecilia Cheung IS absolutely gorgeous, they willingly attempt to do as she asks. Infuriated, the king draws his sword and it is at this point that Kunlun, dressed in Guangming's armor, arrives at the scene chucks his sword at the king, which impales him, and rescues Qingcheng. However, their victory is short lived because Wuhuan and his men catch up to him. Wuhuan states that if Guangming jumps he will spare the life of Qingcheng. Kunlun, in love with Qingcheng and knowing that he can survive the fall willingly jumps. Kunlun returns to his master and returns the crimson armor to him. Guangming is angered, he had been beaten and trussed up to a tree by his own men who did not kill him only because he had been their superior officer, because Kunlun killed the king, but the two hurry to rescue Qingcheng in which they are successful. Qingcheng is in love with Guangming because of the words he said to her before he jumped, you must not die, you have to live, however, she of course does not know that it was actually Kunlun who spoke these words so her heart's desires are misguided, but Kunlun, whose own desires come in second to his master's stands aside while Guangming tries to make Guangming truly fall in love with him. However, can Kunlun truly keep up this farce?
There's a nice Road Runner-cartoon moment when the slave runs really, really fast, carrying the wounded general on his back while dodging an attack of CG bulls. I can't imagine Road Runner was what Chen had in mind for the most expensive movie ever made in China, but then, I was born too late for the time of the snowy eagle.
In order to create a more appealing version for Western audiences the movie had to be cut - like many other Asian productions. More than 80 differences can be found between both versions and altogether, nearly 20 minutes were left out. This streamlined version loses the depth of the Original cut. 7cb1d79195
