Best strategy game with special effects and awesome battle experience.
Never has a game brought me this level of frustration and angry outbursts aside from Rome 2 at release. I was happy to see Warhammer launching without problems. I was happy with the cool graphics and new hero system. Spells and more that we had only seen from the mods unlike vanilla game-play.
But these cool things soon came to an end when I began to see how "Creative" assembly which is hardly a name this developer lives up to nowadays, had done.
Warning: If you're a fanboy who can't handle hearing criticism then just down vote this review and go about your day because I'm about to highlight every cursed problem this dumbed down excuse for a strategy game has. Have a good day.
Now for the rest of us total war RTS fans.
Nr 1: The AI. Its dumb beyond belief because its officially worse than Rome 2's. Does it camp in-front of cities? yes occasionally when bugging out if you got several reinforcements arriving. How about the path-finding? Still a total mess. Units will deploy ladders and then decide to ignore the ladders they placed and run through the open gate during siege battles. Babysitting is real. Plus they get stuck frequently. But that's not what kills it for me. No. its the campaign AI. The battle AI is actually better but that doesn't matter because the AI will hardly ever attack you when you get a strength rating of 1. Which is extremely easy to do. The only thing this downgraded garbage AI cares about is the Strength Rating. Nothing else. So in order to actually be attacked by anything that's NOT scripted... you gotta nerf yourself and that's just plain dumb and impractical. This has ruined my experience playing this game because it got so tremendously boring just clicking end turn and ...
Nr 2: BEING PEACE SPAMMED every turn every turn if the AI is weaker than you. It is enough to drive you completely mad and wish for a diplomacy block feature which CA should have implemented. QA anyone?
Nr 3: Assassination obsessed agents. CA loves their agents. because total war has always been about the campaign map right? Right? No. Total war is about the battles but there you go. Lets keep the player on the battle map and make him/her insanely angry because we will kill the general he loves and has upgraded over and over and over, forcing the player to wait 4-5 turns for the general to generically recover only to get assassinated again. And this is unavoidable unless you use mods to nerf or remove them because you will have to play on harder difficulties like me (legendary / very hard) to remotely get a challenge. Due to reasons mentioned above.
Nr 4: The siege battles. And this is where it gets ugly. Never have I seen such a dumbed down total war game. It is...the most casual total war to date. And it is so because of the siege battles. A major part of the game. Maps are tiny, linear and more corridor style than ever before. Invisible walls at every corner, and super cool backgrounds that you WANT to go to but cannot.
Who is this game made for, CA? Because it sure as hell is not made for the old school total war gamers who actually applied strategy and intelligence to go about taking a castle with multiple walls, fortifications etc. You cannot flank or attack from other directions. You cannot REMOTELY hide from the overpowered toxic super towers. The moment you click " Start battle" the towers will immediately begin shooting high powered AOE projectiles at your men. You will not have time to do anything but RUSH the walls and several hundreds of casualties in the process. Only to get stuck in the most boring wall fight seeing the warscape engine play "Lets pretend this is MTW2 :) " Its not. Its a damn gauntlet. As basic as it gets. The music is cool but played over and over during the fights. Like 1 single music track. Thanks for that. Totally not getting repetitive.
Interior of sieges are super tiny as well. You got a few lanes and then a corny flag location which the AI rarely ever uses. Unlike Shogun 2 where the AI would retreat and trigger a Last Stand mechanic this never happens in Warhammer. Soldiers just break so quickly and run. Even though some are at 100 %. Vampire armies fall apart like cardhouses. Combat is too fast. Morale breaks too quickly. CA learned nothing from Attila or Rome. Absolutely nothing. Its as if they make it so fast because they know it sucks and if we'd play any longer we'd go crazy. And then there's the fact that the game is unfinished. When destroying walls no debris is left behind. Soldiers don't die when the walls crumble either. Walls vanish out of nowhere. It looks so cheap and early access. Plus leaving behind invisible walls.
Finally the lack of animations. Kill animations isn't the problem. Its the lack of EVERY other animations. No cannon reload. No gun reload No pushing the battering ram. No carrying ladders (because they manifest out of NOWHERE.) No cannons on walls either like Rome 2. The Trailer is LYING.
Fanboys will defend it. But Ill tell you this. Graphics ain't everything. This game is dumbed down and lazy in design. Massively unfun. Clunky Combat Zero challenge even on legendary. No surprise considering CA's track record. 6/10. Above average. Saved from A 5 ONLY by its hero system. STOP DUMBING DOWN YOUR GAMES! STOP BEING SO LAZY. And fanboys, please stop defending it.
The MTW2 Mod (Call of Warhammer) is better. Kudos to the modders. But its sad for a Tripple-A game developer. And frustrating as a passionate fan.
