oxford muscle grading scale
Manual muscle testing (MMT) is an important part of a physical therapy examination and grading strength is a skill that every therapist should know and enhance, Grade 1 (Trace) Patient is not able to move the joint even with gravity eliminated. However, closer examination by the therapist would reveal slight muscle
1 – 2 Adjust range of motion criterion to accommodate for muscle contractures. 3 This grade can only be assigned to muscles tested in the standard (against gravity) testing position. 6 – 10 MMT grades in this range are heavily influenced by the stature of the subject and tester.
An assessment of muscle strength is typically performed as part of a patient's objective assessment. The Oxford scale is commonly used by physiotherapists to manually assess muscle strength. According to the Oxford scale, muscle strength is graded 0 to 5.
Grading Scale Range: 0 to 5. 0, None; No visible or palpable contraction. 1, Trace; Visible or palpable contraction with no motion ( a 1 ). 2, Poor; Full ROM gravity eliminated. 3, Fair; Full ROM against gravity. 4, Good; Full ROM against gravity, moderate resistance. 5, Normal; Full ROM against gravity, maximul resistance

20 Feb 2014 Grade 1 (Trace) : This grade indicates that no visible movement of the tested body part is detected except a slight contraction. Upon, closer examination with palpation, the therapist will be able to detect a slight muscle contraction.Grade 0 (Zero; No trace)This grade indicates a complete lack of contraction.

The subject demonstrates no palpable muscle contraction. Trace 1/5. The subjet's muscle contraction can be palpated, but there is no joint movement. Poor Minus 2-/5. The subject does not complete ROM in a gravity eliminated position. Poor 2/5. The subject completes range of motion with gravity eliminated. Poor Plus 2+/5.
The Guide to Physical Therapist Practice[1] lists both manual muscle testing (MMT) and dynamometry as appropriate measures of muscle strength. Manual muscle The isometric hold (break test) shows the muscle to have a higher test grade than the resistance given throughout the range (make test).[3] The handheld
