Follow the Four Horsemen in another crazy adventure as they take to the streets of Macau to pull off the craziest stunt yet in order to expose a new threat that tried to end them for good. Will they succeed again and expose this man or fail hopelessly and spend the rest of their years locked in jail?
One year after outwitting the FBI and winning the public's adulation with their Robin Hood-style magic spectacles, The Four Horsemen resurface for a comeback performance in hopes of exposing the unethical practices of a tech magnate. The man behind their vanishing act is none other than Walter Mabry, a tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the mastermind behind it all.
The Four Horsemen resurface and are forcibly recruited by a tech genius to pull off their most impossible heist yet.
This film is the sequel to Now You See Me, we have the Four Horsemen back except one of them: Isla Fisher, who's been replaced by Lizzy Caplan. The pleasure of NYSM2 is that the Horsemen perform magic with human powers. They are superheroes of the mind. Three years ago NYSM was a grand illusion thriller, drawing on elements from Nolan's The Prestige and Soderbergh's Ocean series.
Mark Ruffalo is the core character of this film, his sincerity makes it work. In my opinion he carries the entire film. He has a heartfelt story in the film and his character has been given the most logical reasons to be there and exist. All of the other characters seem to be contractually obliged to be there. Whereas Ruffalo has motivation. As far as characters go, the rest don't really have much going on.
Bigger isn't always better, in the case of sequel, especially in a movie about magicians and out-tricking people. Less is better. The key is accuracy. Though, the director keeps things moving at a smooth pace. The first movie had me questioned some of the things that happened, but for the most part you go gracefully along and have fun! In some ways this sequel is quite the same but it lacks of substance. There's tons of flashy big sequences but none of them really had up to anything. Furthermore, there were an absurd amount of continuity errors in this film. usually I don't look for that sort of things, and filmmakers don't expect their audience to. However, when you examines film and you really look for errors like that, it starts to become noticeable. Finally, this movie is edited with impressive rapid-fire precision. We keep thinking: when is the climax going to arrive?
Overall, in NYSM2 there is always more than meets the eye.
Now you see me is one of my favourite films of that year and I am very curious in finding out whether it still is any good in this second installment. Firstly Before going into this film I was very disappointed that Isla Fisher is no longer coming back but I was interested in seeing how they would handle that. I was pleasantly surprised with Lizzy Caplan's Lula who may strike annoying at times but seems to handle it just right so it isn't too over the top at times.
There were several odd things in this film including Woody Harrelson playing two roles. It was unnecessary and just made it all seem very strange. The film seems to lose some of the fun elements that the original had and is replaced with fast talking and a very sloppy plot. I found it quite predictable at times which makes their efforts of making big reveals seem amazing and unbelievable pretty stupid.
However the final act I feel was great and I feel was really what they should have stuck with instead of this dull series of talking, outsmarting and little tricks. The large scale and the tricks I feel is what made me like the first film so much and should have been a larger part of this film. I would expect at least 2 or 3 large scale performances from the horseman.
Another more personal problem of the film would center around a minor character played by Jay Chou. Since I am a Taiwanese I payed close attention to Jay Chou's involvement with the production of Now you see me 2. I was disappointed that he was after all apparently just a sales gimmick to sell more tickets to the Asian market. It was ridiculous that His character got around 5 minutes of screen time and around 10 lines and he was still front and center of some of the posters of Now you see me 2 that I've seen. He was more of a cameo really, this sort of false advertising made me leave the theater quite disappointed after all. I understand that the language barrier would likely result in him not be able to deliver well in terms of acting and dialogue but in that case studios shouldn't throw him on every poster selling him as some sort of major character.
Now You See Me 2 is more like a giddy piece of cheese from the ’80s, a chance to spend two more hours with characters we like, doing variations on the things that made us like them in the first place. The revisit, in this case, is well-earned.
