King John Lackland reneges in 1215, the year the barons force him to sign to Magna Carta, on its parliamentary terms to resume his tyrannical misrule, and raised an army of pagan mercenaries to smash those barons who dare resist again. William d'Aubigny's warrior band, including knight Templar Thomas Marshal and his squire Guy, decides to make a stand in Rochester, a strategic castle to bar the road to London, so they force its lord, baron Reginald de Cornhill, to side with them after eliminating the Danish watchdogs. Captain Tiberius's mercenary band fails for months to make their numeric superiority count during a bloody siege, over which John presides personally, eager to take the castle before French and/or domestic rebel reinforcements may arrive. Baron Reginald's wife Isabel regrets their arranged marriage, enough to nearly-openly lust for handsome crusade veteran Thomas, who however takes his order vows seriously.
It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta, a noble, seminal document that upheld the rights of free-men. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule. Barring his way stood the mighty Rochester castle, a place that would become the symbol of the rebel's momentous struggle for justice and freedom.
I was disappointed by this movie, though some really good parts. Bad points: - a lot of caricatures of medieval society (prisoner in a cage, dirt, boiling oil, etc. - some scenes with useless "gore" - limited performance of actors - some discussions completely out of place (especially the castle lady texts), that would never have occurred at this time - and some lengths. Good points : - main characters (templar, king, danish chief) - the unlikely defender group - the castle besieging - some very good fights.
I appreciated the reminder of the 7 samurais, even if this movie is far away from Kurosawa's. To conclude : this movie is OK if you're looking for a basic diversion, but if you're a bit more demanding, go your way.
Although i'm far from being a royalist , i love reading or watching about what our kings and queens got up to centuries ago. Ironclad is the story of a group of Knights Templars who try to defend Rochester Castle from the forces of King John after he decided to ignore the terms of the Magna Carta that he has only just signed.
Although Ironclad isn't totally historically correct , it is still an entertaining enough film and despite it being two hours long i found it an easy watch.
This is not a film for the squeamish as it features lots and lots of fighting scenes that include decapitation and lopping off limbs and there are also some scenes involving King John that might well make you wince .
Paul Giamatti is as mad as a box of frogs and is perfect as King John and the rest of the cast do a fair enough job but what i really like about this film is that it really does show you why these castles were built and how difficult it was to penetrate them.
Not Bad at all.
Ironclad alternately feels, plays and sounds like an abridged television mini-series and a feature-length video game.
