An F.B.I. Agent goes undercover to catch a gang of surfers who may be bank robbers.
A string of systematic bank robberies by a daring gang of thieves who name themselves The Ex-Presidents, terrorize sun-drenched southern California, as the rubber-masked criminals act fast without leaving a trace, right under the noses of the police. Under those circumstances, the clean-cut and inexperienced F.B.I. Agent, Johnny Utah, after following up on a lead, goes undercover to infiltrate the local surfing community to extract information from his surf tutor, Tyler. Before long, as Johnny gets into the group, he will befriend Bodhi, the mystic and enigmatic surf leader, who will teach him not only how to catch the perfect wave, but also how to find a new meaning in life. Inevitably, Johnny walks a thin line. How far will he go without blowing his cover?
This was one of my favorite all-time movies. Keanu Reeves was impressive and Patrick Swayze playing a character that he's never encountered before. It was well-written and well-directed. It was entertaining and kept you on the edge of your seat. I would recommend this to everyone.
Just watched this movie for the second time last night and I have to say that it ROCKS! It is so much more than an action movie. It is about trying to find your own personal freedom whilst battling against a system that, despite the many freedoms it provides, still tries to keep you on a tight leash. It is about the never ending struggle of good vs. evil. The end scenes being a total moral dilemma for Johnny. What would you do if you were him? Also it is about one mans love for another woman. He goes against everything he believes to be right in order to stay with her. I mean, he jumps out of a plane without a parachute in order to save her!!!. Now that is true love!! Who wouldn't love someone who did that? I know that this comment might sound a bit fluffy but hey, I'm a girl - what more can I say!
A lot of what Bigelow puts up on the screen bypasses the brain altogether, plugging directly into our viscera, our gut. The surfing scenes in particular are majestically powerful, even awe-inspiring. Bigelow's picture is a feast for the eyes, but we watch movies with more than our eyes. She seduces us, then asks us to be bimbos.
Tapping the Source (1984), a novel by Kem Nunn, provided the inspiration for Point Break. It's called "Hundreds of Tears" by Sheryl Crow. Yes. There's likely no way a surfer as experienced as Bodhi could survive it. Bodhi even says earlier in the film when he describes the storm at Bell's Beach and how big the waves will be that surfing the break will be the "ultimate price".
