Near the small desert town of Santa Ynez, a mysterious black car runs down two teenage bicyclers en route to camp, then it hit-and-runs a hitchhiker with local Amos Clements as witness. Sheriff Everett puts his men on alert and plants road blocks in the area to arrest the murderer, but soon he himself falls victim to the car. Sheriff Wade Parent leads the hunt for the vehicle that threatens their town and seems impossible to locate. When his beloved girlfriend, teacher Lauren Humphries, challenges the driver in a cemetery, the car hunts her in her home. Wade realizes he might be dealing with supernatural powers.
A mysterious black, sleek automobile terrorizes everyone it comes into contact with in a small town in Utah. The local sheriff may be the only person who can stop this menace which has been possessed by pure evil.
It's a shame this movie is currently being rated so poorly on here. It of course by no means is a great movie but it at least is one that offers some great entertainment.
Of course this movie tried to cash in on the success of "Jaws". It doesn't only use a similar concept, it also features a similar type of style and atmosphere. This is most notable with its characters. You can really call this movie "Jaws" but then with a car, instead of a giant shark. Sounds perhaps bad and ridicules but the movie does work out on a level of entertainment. And when a movie does this, it really doesn't matter much that this movie is being a rip-off and a far from original one.
It's definitely a movie that could had been better, by adding some more excitement to it all. They could had made the car itself more threatening and mysterious perhaps, like for instance Spielberg managed to do earlier with his TV-movie "Duel". But would the movie had been just as entertaining then as it is now? Perhaps not, so I won't really complain about it.
It was also fun watching some big name actors appearing in this. I had never seen Ronny Cox without gray hair before and James Brolin is also an actor most people will now days only recognize with gray hair.
It's simply a movie that I could not help but to enjoy throughout.

I caught this one on the sci-fi channel and thought I would watch it and have to say it isn't very good. Maybe it is the fact that it is a car that is killing people kind of like "Christine" that turns me off. I just don't find the concept of a ghost car all that scary or even interesting. This one has this mysterious car running people off the road and killing them. One guy's wife ends up even being killed by the car and that is one good point of the movie, cause it sure was surprising and I wasn't expecting it. Once the town realizes what the heck they are dealing with the devise a way to stop it. The end though is quite lame. One thing though that will stick with you is the horn to the car. You will always remember how it sounds.
The demonic car in this film was designed by George Barris, who specialized in custom cars and who worked on a number of film and television projects, including the car driven by TV's "The Munsters", Herbie "The Love Bug", and the vehicle driven by the heroes in "Ghostbusters".
