The story of the Newton gang, the most successful bank robbers in history, owing to their good planning and minimal violence.
Four Newton brothers are a poor farmer family in the 1920s. The oldest of them, Willis, one day realizes that there's no future in the fields and offers his brothers to become a bank robbers. Soon the family agrees. They become very famous robbers, and five years later execute the greatest train robbery in American history.
I picked up this movie initially because I'm a Dwight Yoakam fan and had to see it for that; I found myself enjoying the entire film for it's open, good cheer and deft handling of a time when there was a very fine, blurred line between "respectable folks" and "criminals." The Newton Boys may not have been completely the former, but they approached the latter in a far less lethal fashion than Bonnie & Clyde. I was favorably impressed with most of the acting, and glad to see Dwight being used in an amiable role with some serious screen time; also excellent was Chloe Webb in a small role as Avis Glasscock.
Pitiful! I walked out of this movie and chastised my roommate for having dragged me to it! The thirty minutes that I saw showed no acting whatsoever. All it showed was a bunch of young actors that look good to chicks acting like a bunch of country hicks a "whoopin' and a hollerin'".
Director Richard Linklater ("Dazed and Confused") should have taken a cue from the music -- the film needs a lot more snap.
