There is a work around That involves the use of Apple's Pages. create your links in word. Save document. Close Word. Open Pages and import the document. Verify the links are still live if not (usually they are) , if they are not add them. Save as a Pages Document first. Then reopen the pages Document.

There are two ways to to have URL to be active in a PDF created by a Mac (But neither method works if you used Word's URL wizard to create the link. We had no issues with Links, nor with Page and Section breaks when Mac was using C, C+, Objective C, only when it went UNIX based did we have these problems.
