The aftermath of the Oxygen Destroyer brings forth Destoroyah, a beast intent on killing Godzilla, who is on the verge of a nuclear meltdown.
Something has destroyed Birth Island, home of Godzilla and Little Godzilla and soon, it is discovered that Godzilla has developed a bright flaming glow, indicating that his nuclear energy is growing out of control. Fearing that Godzilla will soon explode, the G-Force tries to freeze him, thus cooling his temperature. But another problem arises as a horde of human sized creatures, formed from a combination of Godzilla cells, and the weapon that destroyed the original one, The Oxygen Destroyer. Now the military must try to stop these creatures and stop Godzilla from going through a nuclear meltdown that could destroy the world.
On the surface, "Godzilla vs. Destroyer" may look like it's just your average 90s Godzilla flick, offering you nothing more than what you would see in "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" or "Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla". Mediocre special effects, men in rubber suits, members of the cast who don't really know how to act, and an okay basic storyline. But once you actually sit down and look at the film and go deeper, you realize that it really is one of the better Godzilla films there is out there. And it's the second-best of the Heisei Godzilla movies. Not only does it offer great action sequences, but it also presents heart-breaking dramatic moments and you can feel part of you dying with the great monster himself.
"Godzilla vs. Destroyer" has this feeling to it that I really appreciate and find attractive. It has an atmosphere that really makes you think about the monsters and treat them as more than just men in rubber suits, which they are. But you almost see them as real characters. Godzilla's new enemy, and one of his most formidable, Destroyer, is a very creative and original design of monster and he is given development and traits that make him seem like a real, destructive and killer monster. A beast that destroys for the sheer enjoyment of killing. And he reflects the fears of Dr. Serizawa, who is indirectly responsible for Destroyer's creation. Dr. Serizawa feared that his weapon, the Oxygen Destroyer, would be used in reckless destruction and lead to the end of the world. And Destroyer seems to bring his fears to life. And Godzilla himself, while still an anti-hero, seems like he is really putting his life on the line to both save the world and destroy it. Even though he is on the verge of meeting his end.
As many people know, "Godzilla vs. Destroyer" is the first film in over forty years in which Godzilla is killed off. And to be honest, the death scene of the monster is one of the most moving and dramatic cinema deaths ever to grace the screen. About the last twenty minutes of the film is full of great drama and in the meantime, Godzilla is slowly losing his life. And you feel part of you dying with him, as you had seen and fallen in love with this monster in his previous movies. Even though he always had been an anti-hero and was a killer, you feel incredible sympathy for Godzilla and when he's at last gone forever, you're in tears. And as the monster dies, there is no celebration. There is very little response from the characters, who can only stand and watch in silence. Even the characters who for years had been wanting to see Godzilla dead, stand and look with expressions that clearly read "did it have to end this way?" Akira Ifukube's wonderful and somber music in the background really sets the theme. Ifukube had always been a masterful score composer and "Godzilla vs. Destroyer" features one of his best scores in years.
The special effects in "Godzilla vs. Destroyer" are also pretty good, maybe even a bit better than some of the other Heisei films. Of course, there are still some scenes where Godzilla and the others are more than obviously made of rubber, but the pyrotechnics, the blood used for the battles, and the colorful and creative death-rays are truly a treat.
There is one problem though and that revolves around the juvenile forms of Destroyer. These numerous creatures and their battle with the SWAT team was more than obviously ripped off from the classic science-fiction film "Aliens". Destroyer's second jaw, and the SWAT team's trackers and guns were definitely inspired from the Alien films. But I can get around that and just sit back and enjoy the movie, for it doesn't rip off anything else. Everything else is entirely original.
Performances by the cast were overall pretty good, although the actor who played Dr. Ijuin didn't seem to put enough effort behind his performance, mostly in the final death scene. But everybody else was fairly good, especially Megumi Odaka, who was always keen at her role as Miki Saegusa. The actors playing Kenichi Yamane and Dr. Fukuzawa were also favorable in their roles. The only thing wrong is that a lot of the cast don't get the development they need, unlike the monsters. But that's nothing unexpected in a Godzilla film.
Bottom line, "Godzilla vs. Destroyer" is one of the better Godzilla films in years and still remains to this day, twelve years later, as one of the best. It is one of the most moving, visually spectacular, and compelling entries in the Godzilla series. It's an action movie with soul-killing drama that can make you cry.
Other than the original film, this movie is my all-time favorite Godzilla film and if you ask me one of the best Japanese monster films ever!! It is sad, yet dramatic, and still is one action-packed G-film. I love this movie first off because of its story. Kazuki Omori returns for the screenplay and he did a super job! I love how it references to "Gojira" by using a monster, Destroyah, as I prefer to call him. Although his actual Japanese name translated is Destroyer (after the Oxygen Destroyer). The story also tries to convey a nuclear message in mind with Burning Godzilla's meltdown, excellent! Takao Owara directs once more and he definitely knows what he's doing. So ironic he let us down with "Godzilla 2000". Akira Ifukbe does a compelling score, one of his best. 'Burning' Godzilla's terror theme sounded great and Destroyah's theme pounded terrifically. Godzilla Jr.'s theme returns from "Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II" but now it's sad and moving. The final climax piece for Godzilla's death is the saddest music you'll ever hear in a G-film. It's so tragic, it made my eyes practically water.
Godzilla looks tight as Burning Godzilla and it was incredible effect, especially when CGI glows were added. Jr. looked great and brung a whole new design for infant Godzilla's. No more Minilla or Little Godzilla. Strangely, he's still pretty small compared to his adoptive father. Then comes Destroyah, one of my favorite monsters. He was incredibly original and probably one of the fiercest-looking foes Godzilla's ever met. Most of the forms looked great and moved realistically, except for the human-sized Destroyers. They looked good here and there, but overall were more than satisfying. The real weak pointto me was the soldier fighting them; the scene kind of holds back on the violence, which made it seem kiddy almost. But the scne with the reporter in the car was awesome!! They looked fearsome, and the flying and aggregate form still were A plus work. Thanks to Koichi Kawakita, we see the magnificent final form; a huge beast that delivered several unique attacks that were unexpected. I can't decide what's cooler: Destroyah's gripping tail claw or laser horn. One major reason this film is so great because of the graphic fight scenes. The monster bloodshed is fantastic and helped recover the film's darker tone.
Another is the drama. All along you know Godzilla is going to die, possibly ruin the Earth for eternity and at the same time, despite the pain, he is trying to get to his son. Destroyah is battling Jr. at Tokyo and you wonder; will he make it in time? At first it seems so, the two sharing a brief reunion, just before the reborn of Destroyah ruins it by killing Jr. It's a heart breaking moment that made me cry when I first saw it ( in 2000. I was a precious 8). Jr.'s theme makes it a tragedy. We see Godzilla mourn his son, showing us the battle worn monster still has heart. Destroyah too gets his character moment, both when we killed Jr. and when he interrupts Godzilla's grieving, showing us he is a cruel and truly evil monster. It is these moments I find so thrilling about this film. The monsters do more than just shoot rays at each other put simply. Then Godzilla and Destroyah battle and it's pretty intense. All along, Megumi Odaka plays her role beautifully and other than "Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II", this is the only other G-film to make her a major part of the story. Although I have yet to see "Godzilla vs. Biollante", Odaka's first portrayal of Miki Saegusa (Besides, she's hot in this movie. I didn't like her hair in the last film). The battle is incredible and keeps on coming up with ways to surprise you.
The Super-X III stars in the final battle and surprisingly, along with the JSDF, blast my Destroyah out of the sky like a duck. This makes him the only monster in the Godzilla franchise to be killed by the Japanese military and not by Godzilla himself. Just an interesting point I wanted to bring up. After that, Godzilla unfortunately melts down, a combination of spectacular special effects and tragedy. Godzilla literally melts away, seemingly taking Tokyo with him (all the nuclear fallout). The music really enhances the King of the Monster's death I really have to say. It also seems both Godzilla's have died. However, Jr. is revived by his father's massive radiation fall out, creating a tight but still sad ending. A silhouette Jr., now a nearly fully grown adolescent Godzilla, roars in sorrow over his now gone father.
With both great SFX, a sad-ending, superb story line and Momoko Koichi even reprising her role from the first film, one of the best G films ever!! Despite its budget constraints, this film delivers in my opinion.
Yes. The alternate ending consisted of footage not seen by many other than in Japan but it does contain a few shots from Godzilla's death as seen in the final cut. Godzilla still dies, but in the alternate ending Destroyer actually gets up after being shot down by the JSDF and the Super-X III, but is badly wounded and unable to fight. Godzilla in his rage grabs him by the horn and continues to pummel him with his free fist. While doing so he finally reaches the meltdown temperature of 1200 and the army rains freezer weapons on both of them. Destroyer ,due to being so close to Godzilla during his meltdown and the extreme cold created by the Super X III, dies right before Godzilla does as well. In the end, Junior still is revived so in essence it's more or less the same, but director Takao Owara decided to give the Monster King his much needed center stage as he died, and so new shots were added and Destroyah dies long before so. The Sony Tristar DVD contains no special features, what so ever, but the Toho DVD-r copy (which is available on Amazon) has this ending along with plenty of other features. Yes, in fact there are three. keep in note these scenes can not be seen on the internet anywhere (as far as I have searched) or on the Sony Tristar DVD release of the film. In order to see them you must buy the actual Toho DVD, available on Amazon.com and monsterislandtoys.com.
(1) One has Junior entering Tokyo in the same style as he did in the final cut, along with the flying form of Destroyer ramming him, but it is shot from entirely different angles.
(2) The second is the highly talked about scene where Destroyer's chest opens up and fires an enormous blast at Godzilla, knocking him into a building and hurting him badly. Godzilla however recovers and counters with his breath weapon. While as the scene is pretty much complete, with sound effects and everything, it was apparently too early in production to add either Godzilla or Destroyer's beam weapons into the shots.
(3) The alternate ending, which you can read further about above... Yes, kind of. Unlike most movies that have an black backdrop during the credits, the Heisei Godzilla films had special footage that played during the credits. And because this was (at the time) to be Godzilla's final film, there are scenes from all seven Heisei Godzilla films, along with scenes from the original 1954 film "Gojira", inorder to commemorate the Monster king's death. 646f9e108c
