A historical drama based on the founding of the Republic of China when nationalist forces led by Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Qing Dynasty.
I watched this movie while flying to China in 2011 when it was first released, after studying, reviewing, reading, absorbing everything I could about China. Historically it was very well done, the acting was outstanding, and the artistic license was held to a minimum.
Do not expect the schlock of American films, do not expect to be spoon-fed everything, this movie expects you to think. Expect and explore the nuances of subtly presented ideas, bring the historical context to the forefront, and contemplate the meaning behind each scene to one of the greatest periods of change in China.
Read about the revolution, the dynasty that ended, and the China that emerged. Research Sun Yat Sen. Quite a bit about him was left out from movie, researching him will add to your appreciation.
1911 is billed as Jackie Chan's Centential movie or in other words his 100th on screen movie credit which is quite an accomplishment for anyone.
The story is of an epic nature in both scale and story a really well made movie with political intrigue based on historical characters. The story involved the Xinhai Revolution to take over the Qing Chinese Dynasty.
While Jackie Chan might be the top billed actor in the movie in reality he's probably only the 2nd or 3rd lead role with the character of Yat Sen the leader of the Revolution being the main character and Jackie's character playing his most trusted General.
If the success of epic storytelling were determined by the sheer number of unnecessary on-screen name tags, 1911 would be a masterpiece. But the small matters of characterization, audience identification, and scene-making are entirely absent here.
