Rollo decides to marry his sweetheart Betsy and sail to Honolulu. When she rejects him he decides to go alone but boards the wrong ship, the "Navigator" owned by Betsy's father. Unaware of this, Betsy boards the ship to look for her father. whom spies capture before cutting the ship loose. It drifts out to sea with the two socialites each unaware of there being anyone else on board.
Two spoiled rich people find themselves trapped on an empty passenger ship.
Even though this wasn't my favorite of Buster Keaton films, it's still a really great one. Not only was the movie hilarious with the constant problems that was happening on the ship but I must give a huge pound of applause to the photographers and director Buster Keaton. The shots definitely helped the humor in the movie, especially in the scene where the two characters were running up and down the ship trying to find who else was on the ship but kept missing each other. The shots for that scene were fantastic because you could see each time how they just missed each other. Once again though Buster Keaton's over exaggerating movement and acting helped keep the film constantly comedy packed. As well as the chemistry with his costar Kathryn McGuire, the two of them keep the movie entertaining.
To me, silent films have to go above and beyond to be entertaining. I'm not a big fan of no sound. I like for the film experience to be equally visceral as it is visual. I like a film to evoke all five senses. I will say this: The Navigator is a solid film. Its silly, its emotional, and its smart. Buster Keaton has gumption. I found the underwater scene to be very impressive. I didn't think the technology back then could support such an elaborate sequence of events.
All-in-all I will that when it comes to silent films, I'm not that interested. However, watching Buster Keaton perform his own stunts and really have the heart to act our certain scenes gives me a feeling of empathy towards his characters.
