Sailors of the Ukrainian navy (1920)
The Ukrainian navy was established after the October Revolution of 1917. It formed a key part of the armed forces of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, which was itself proclaimed after the Bolshevik seizure of power in Petrograd. This small marine force of the newly created republic was based on a free will of Imperial Russian sailors to pledge allegiance to Ukraine.
It was never fully operational, as the country constantly fought for its survival against neighboring Soviet Russia and Germany. Eventually most of the Ukrainian Fleet was either sunk by the Bolsheviks or became part of the expeditionary force of the White Army. The navy was officially decommissioned after Ukraine had been overrun by the Bolsheviks in 1921, and the few remaining ships were incorporated into the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.
