Gone – The End
He didn't care about the people he earlier noticed.
"I have to call my wife," he heard himself say trembling. He started to look for his cell phone in his pockets. He couldn't find it and he felt the panic raise in his throat.
Voices, so many mumbling voices asked him different things, but he couldn't hear what. His voice in his head was confusing him with various thoughts. But the one who was clearest told him to call his wife and tell her about Kate. While two police officer walks into the store he found his phone. The moment they reached Stephen he had pressed every button of his wife's number. A young female officer interrupted him before he could press the green button to call.
"Excuse me Sir," was all she managed to say before she was interrupted by Stephen. "My little girl is gone! You have to do something!!" he said loudly. But the young woman explained they were there because of a drunk man. They also said they couldn't help yet. It was to early. Stephen had to call tomorrow.
"I.. I have to call my wife," Stephen replied disappointed and pressed the button to call. His wife answered quite fast. Happy of course, it was her husband. Not knowing what happened, she thought he wanted to ask something.
"Kate is gone.." he whispered. He didn't receive any answer so he hung up.
It knocked at the door and with tired steps Stephen went to open. His eyes were red and swollen. He had been looking for his little girl the whole night together with neighbours and friends. With his wife behind him, he opened the door and faced the same policemen from yesterday. Both waited, for Stephen to say something, with serious faces. The atmosphere was tense, the news could only be bad.
"Sir. We have news about your daughter," the female police said, her voice low and tense. Stephen's mouth was dry, he swallowed, worry over his daughter clouding his senses.
The assistant to the female police said: "I'm afraid we only have bad news..."
