Book descriptionThere were a lot of things I liked about the Phalanx Covenant. There were a few things I didn’t like about the Phalanx Covenant. Unfortunately, the likeable things came in the earlier issues, while the less likeable ones came toward the end of my reading experience, soвЂ"guess which part is more fresh in my mind?(Had things been reversed, this would probably be a 4-star rating instead of 3. But, alas.)In the interests of being fair, I’ll go ahead and list 3 things I liked and 3 things I disliked:Things I Liked1. I loved how all the X-teams got thrown together and then split into smaller groups. My favorite group had to be Banshee, Emma Frost, Jubilee and Sabretooth. (I mean, reallyвЂ"what the heck are those four doing together?) Banshee was particularly awesome, for some reason.2. I liked that the actual X-men themselves played very little part in this whole storyline. I mean, I like the X-men, of course, but for whatever reason I enjoyed the spotlight shining on some of the other characters in that universe.3. The Phalanx scared me (in a good way), for two reasons: A) I’ve always been terrified by stories where the protagonists are some of the last remaining “normal” people aroundвЂ"the ones who haven’t been possessed/infected/assimilated/whatevered by a force that’s taking over the world. This is especially true when that force can appear as normal humans, because then you never know when the person standing next to you might be the bad guy. (Man, I really need to read Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Or at least watch the movie.) I don’t know why this frightens me, but it does. Maybe it’s just my general trust issues surfacing. In any case, this is an attribute that applied to the shapeshifting/assimilating/techno-organic race of the Phalanx.B) I’m doubly afraid of things I can’t think my way around, and with the Phalanx, it seemed like there was no logical solution about how to beat them. I mean, they’re everywhere, they can shapeshift, andвЂ"worst of allвЂ"they can adapt to a mutant power after it’s hit them once, meaning you can never hurt them with it again. (In theory. See below.*)Things I Didn’t Like So Much1. There seemed to be a disconnect between issues on a few occasions. For example, the final two issues come from the Wolverine and Cable books, respectively. In Wolverine’s issue, he and Cable are working together and getting along just fine. Then at the beginning of Cable’s issue (literally moments later, in the chronology of the story), they’re at each other’s throats and bickering for the rest of the story. I was left wondering what happened during those 3 seconds of time that transpired between issues. (Whatever it was, it must have been big.)Similarly, at the end of one of the issues (I forget which one), Polaris is flying a team somewhere by surrounding them with magnetic energy while Siryn uses her vocal powers to direct the glowing green bubble. And then in the next issue they’re suddenly in a spherical ship, because I guess that makes sense.2. *It seems to me that the Phalanx sorta lost their ability to adapt to mutant powers on occasion. You know, when it was convenient to the plot, later on. Hmmm.3. The storyline was split into three “books”вЂ"the first contained 4 issues, the second had 3, and the last one had 2. While I don’t necessarily have anything wrong with this format, there seemed to be such a feeling of finality at the end of the second book that I felt myself wondering why I needed to read those Wolverine and Cable issues. (Although, it did eventually make sense, but not before Wolvie’s issue had sort of bored me.)Overall, I enjoyed reading the storylineвЂ"particularly early on, when things were really intense and I was genuinely worried for the four X-stragglers who were seemingly alone in this battle against a Terminator-like race that was bent on destroying all of mutantkind.
