All his life schoolteacher Frank Sears has carried with him a strange scar given to him by his mother before she committed suicide. The markings lead Frank to a top secret Cold War military project where an unstoppable, malignant organism is unleashed. Unaware that the creature feeds on light and energy, and moves with exponential speed, the army prepares to deploy its most sinister of all weapons - a nuclear bomb. Facing certain global catastrophe, Frank discovers his father had a diabolical connection to the creature's origin. With a ticking nuclear clock, Frank, along with the help of a hazmat specialist Carrie Freeborn, must confront the grim reality that only he is capable of stopping this living hell.
This isn't a terrible movie. It is very dull. You're not going to be able to just sit down and watch it. It is viewable while you're on the elliptical or the bike, and in this day and age there is a place for such a movie. That is obviously what the director markets this movie for. It is hard to fathom what's going on, but the plot is (and this isn't a spoiler, because it becomes evident quite early) about an deadly organism (call it a disease) for which the antibodies must be derived from the one human who has the natural immunity. It's part "Blob", but mixed in with the writer's own additions. Now, every writer in science fiction is toying with an idea of how to do a movie in which one human has an immunity to a disease, and his or her blood must be used to battle it. That said, all the science fiction world expects a good story line to go with it. This isn't the worst. It isn't the best, either. The directing is very disjointed. It seems like an extra long movie. It plods along. Future editing can fix the disjointed part, perhaps, but not the dullness. It will appeal to American audiences, particularly women, since the female lead is one of those pale, plain Janes women can identify with. She's a bit dull and plain looking for men to enjoy, but women usually decide what movies to watch. Again, the director placates his audience, and used confessingly, a lot of acceptable clichés, such as the dark haired man-blonde woman, the monster that can't be killed, the authorities who won't listen to citizens (this one is usually true to life, however). Everything that makes it acdeptable to IMDb members and the American public. But such clichés are in most movies, and this movie doesn't cliché any more than most of them. As I said before, this is marketed to be something you watch while exercising or doing housework. Don't expect anything more.
Having followed the progression of this movie for months after finding out it came through upcoming horror movies.com I finally had the chance to see it yesterday.
Coming from the old creature features of the 80's the current torture porn movement in horror movies that basically consist out of the many ways you can carve up a human being as unpleasantly as possible cant really make me very happy. So finding a creature feature or even a movie made with attention and a lot of love for the material is becoming more and more special. Unfortunately most of the creature features are movies like lake placid 2 or even worse but sometimes a movie pops out which is really well made. And this is such a movie.
It is clear that the director made the best of what he could with the budget available ( somewhere around 4 or 5 million) and what he came up with was an organism which grows exponential and cant be stopped. By using this enemy clever ( meaning not showing it too much, especially its CGI origins) the story unfolds in a much bigger way than your typical deserted location. Especially the beginning which reminds the entering of the marines in Aliens2 of the hive is very good. the promise made in those first scenes is kept up all the way to the end where there is a tad too much CGI ( which shows the budget restrains). It all boils down to a satisfying finale. The only scene that is a bit strange is when the female lead - while losing her husband hours before - has a special rub down scene with the male lead that feels off base somehow, and I am not talking why the scene takes place but the way it is executed. speaking of that female lead, she doesn't put in the strongest of performances but that is the only downside I can see. Small errors in the story aside it is all very well made with smart choices( using satellite imagery to depict the main battle gives it the right "it cant be stopped"feeling we all like in these end of the world movies. Just expect a well paced "end of the world" movie which is made with love on a modest budget.
Very recommended title and for me personally well worth the wait. Would be nice to see what this director can do with more budget.
February 23rd on Sci-Fi Channel. The test audience when asked "How would you describe watching that movie?". Yes, she does. 646f9e108c
