To use the calculator, enter the Maximum Current in Amps of the circuit, and the Length of the Wire, and operating Voltage. Typically most automotive systems run at 13.8V, but you can select 6, 12, 13.8 (Default) or 24 volts. If the wire gauge is OK to use it will have a 'Check Mark' on the same line. The 'Max Length' indicates
Easy to use chart to appropriately size wire and cables for your 12, 24 and 48V DC System.
Cable sizes are particularly important for low voltage battery cables, solar panels, wind turbines and load cables. Voltage drops through incorrectly sized cables are one of the most common reasons for low voltage (12v, 24v or 48v) system faults. If the cable is far too small, it can be very dangerous as the cable will heat up
Use our DC cable sizing calculator to ensure you get the right wire diameter for your solar panel array. please note that the cable size that will be recommended is a minimum - it's advisable to select a larger diameter cable (next size up) where possible. Select the voltage of your system: 12 Volt DC. 24 Volt DC. 48 Volt DC.
Then measure the distance that the wire will travel (length) including the length of the return to ground (the ground wire running to the chassis or back to a ground block or battery. Using these two numbers, Amps and length, locate the nearest gauge value in chart below. For 6 volt automotive systems typically a wire gauge

Maximum current - amps - through a 12V circuit - related to size (AWG) and length of wire.
19 May 2010 Choosing the right wire size for your DC electrical project is important, since a wire that is too small can overheat and possibly start a fire. In addition, the DC Wire Selection Chart shown below assumes a wire insulation rating of 105°C. A lower rating will decrease the current-carrying capacity of the wire.
This loss can be reduced by using a larger cable, but this increases costs. The acceptable maximum voltage drop for DC loads is 5% of nominal battery voltage. The chart and the formula on this page are provided to help you in selecting the best cost / power loss compromise. WIRE CHART. 12 Volt acceptable cable size
