A seasoned team of bank robbers, including Gordon Jennings (Idris Elba), John Rahway (Paul Walker), A.J. (Hayden Christensen), and brothers Jake (Michael Ealy) and Jesse (Chris Brown) Attica successfully complete their latest heist and lead a life of luxury while planning their next job. When Ghost (Tip T.I. Harris), a former member of their team, is released from prison he convinces the group to strike an armored car carrying $20 million. As the "takers" carefully plot their strategy and draw nearer to exacting the grand heist, a reckless police officer (Matt Dillon) inches closer to apprehending the criminals.

Takers is a crime movie featuring a gang of heist merchants, reluctantly spurred into a caper by Ghost, a previous gang member who has just been released from jail. They are being pursued by cop Matt Dillon and his partner.
This fast moving thriller is fairly confusing in its early stages, but you eventually get to the point where you've figured out who everyone is and where they stand. The story is fairly routine and unexceptional, with some plot elements which are only marginally relevant - Marianne Jean-Baptiste's character, for instance, and Zoe Saldana who (to my disappointment) may as well not have been in it. Also the subplot featuring Dillon's partner could have usefully been dropped without really affecting anything very much.
I can see someone casting Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen as brothers at some point. Maybe they were in this one - it wasn't always easy to catch names.
The ending is inconclusive but, I suppose, vaguely satisfying.
This is yet another film which is over-reliant on hand-held camera-work to add hyperkineticism to action sequences. However, as a flaw, this fades into insignificance next to the truly awful intrusive music: there are some really aggressive music cues (notably in the hotel suite shoot-out) which take you out of the movie completely.
I sum this one up as an adequate time passer.
TAKERS is a movie about those who take - in this case organized thieves whose take no prisoners reputation stumbles on vengeance form within and a cop who takes on the impossible bunch for his own reasons. It is a group written piece (and that shows...), directed by John Leussenhop who specializes in these kinds of noisy thrillers, and packs a cast of well- known actors who with a few exceptions have little character development written for them, making them relay on their screen presence to create credible images.
The practiced groups of bank robbers who are living the good life from previous crimes include Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker, Chris Brown, and Michael Ealy. A previous member of the gang has just been released from prison - Ghost (Tip T.I. Harris) - who approaches the old gang with a new challenge worth millions and despite some bad omens the gang prepares to make the heist to end all heists: a major problem is that Ghost is double dealing with a group of Russians and that pits two crime syndicates against each other. Some subplots are present: Idris Elba's sister played by Marianne Jean-Baptiste is recently out of drug rehab and puts a damper on plans; Ghost's old girlfriend played by Zoe Saldana is now Michael Ealy's sweetheart and that churns up problems form the vengeful Ghost; the two cops who have been partners - Matt Dillon and Jay Hernandez - face a surprise in Hernandez' past that leaves Matt Dillon alone to fight the heist.
The problem with this film is not so much the fact that there is nothing new here - the cast makes it well-worth watching - but that the cinematography keeps the lighting level so dark that it is difficult to follow the action except for the expected fire explosions that accompany it. It is a technical problem that could have been fixed - and that may have created a better response at the box office, or maybe it is a law of the DVD.
