In a near future, with China at war against the West, the UK government develops war machines to fight against them. Scientist Vincent works in a military base developing artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense, using soldiers near death in his experiments; however, his true intention is to find a cure to his daughter Mary that has Rett Syndrome. When Vincent meets scientist Ava who has developed an advanced AI, he invites her to work with him for the Defense Department; however, Ava's snoop around the base prompts Chief of Research Thomson into simulating a Chinese attempt to kill her. Vincent decides to use Ava's face and shape to build an indestructible AI Machine. Soon he discovers the Machine developing feelings and growing up as a human being. When Mary gets worse and has to be submitted to surgery, Vincent learns that the Machine has life and is in love with him, but Thomson wants to transform her in a killing machine for the military.
Two artificial intelligence engineers come together as they work to create the first ever self-aware artificial intelligence. A veteran AI engineer secretly hopes to develop technology to help his diseased daughter, even if it means funding comes from the powerful Ministry of Defence (MoD). His new partner, a young woman gifted in the field of AI, is brought on after her breakthroughs are recognized by the MoD. Things go wrong when the MoD takes over and advances the researchers' work to the next level, teaching the AI to kill and follow MoD instructions with its new and nearly indestructible body.
"The Machine" is a sci-film about the lines between artificial intelligence and humanity, simulated life and actual life.
At a top secret military facility, a designer of robots and A.I. struggles to create an intelligent robot, while those who run the base wait to hijack the project for their own ends.
Shrouded in shadows, "The Machine" feels like a low budget production, but manages to avoid cheesiness most of the time. But the film is uneven, showing rough edges. The use of a "Blade Runner" style, including music that feels like it came from BR, seems too obvious in spots, but one thing allows the film to rise above mediocrity: the tour de force performance of Caity Lotz, who portrays The Machine.
The film serves as a parable regarding technology and its inevitable confiscation by those who make weapons. It also, indirectly, delves into the laws of robotics. But its murky purposes are best ignored in favor of admiring Ms. Lotz's captivating portrayal of a being that is childlike, dangerous, life affirming and lethal.
This movie, i saw it with some expectations because some reviews here on IMDb were comparing this movie with blade runner, because of the plot. Saying it could be a prequel. Well let me tell you, what a weak prequel it would be. The film itself is never entertaining, and i don't just mean the lack of action, the script itself is just dull. Why? Simply because, the DEusX Machina theme as already great and better movies than this one. OK, you don't need a sy fy to just have guns blazing, lazers and cgi to amaze your eyes. But at least the script could been better. Starting with the lead actors. The "bond villain", as no charisma in this movie, is face emotion is always the same, in half of the movie i wished him dead... The girl that appears in arrow show, is a little better but her acting of the robot is a little shallow, and cant call the audience to any emotional purpose the film as, to a machine that just acts childish. I explain with a director, with few experience. The CGI was OK for a low budget movie... How can people relate this movie with blade runner, i think is just because of the machine theme, and the human feelings it has. There are trhee movies much better than this that deal with the robot, human feelings thing much better. First Blade runner (masterpiece), second Gattaca (the best one without action or violence), Biencentiniall man (great story) with Robin Williams. And an extra fourth Spielbergs AI, laim to some people but with a great script. Go see these movies and believe the machine, is just a bad attempt. And i love British sy sfy. a 4 out of 10 to me
When Lotz is not onscreen, Stephens is miserable company. But James does reveal a deep fascination with the robotics that suggests the threadbare story was a chance for him to explore the very real advances in artificial intelligence.
