Book descriptionDon’t Call Me Pig, A Javelina Story by Conrad J Storad is an informative children’s book. The story tells children about the height and weight of a javelina, about what they like to eat, and so much more. The author does the informing in such a way that the reader comes to their own conclusion about why no one should mistaken a javelina for a pig. The author does not compare the javelina to a pig but rather tells all about the anatomy, habitat, and behavior of a javelina. After reading the book no one could confuse a javelina for an anything other then what it is. The story is overly didactic throughout the entire book. The author does not want the reader to forget, never to call a javelina a pig. There are many other lessons that the author adds into the text. The most important lesson even more than the “Don’t Call Me Pig” lesson, is the lesson of learning. On the last page of the book it reads, “Tell your friends about Javelina’s because learning is always fun.” In the peritext (on the back jacket flap) the reader finds Conrad J. Storad grew up in Ohio and did not come to Arizona until 1982. When Conrad J. Storad speaks of “learning is always fun” I believe he is speaking to not just the child reading the book but the adult too. In the tone of the story the author sounds joyful to share what he has learned about javelinas to others. The reader can pick up on the fact that the author did not grow up knowing about javelinas. The information in the peritext supports the feeling that the reader may have had. Javelinas are very smelly which I am sure when the author first hand experienced and wanted to know why. “My scent is strong and stinky. I have scent glands below each eye and a big one along my back.” The illustrations support the text in a very silly way. When the text speaks of the scent, the illustration shows a javelin with a perfume bottle spritzing the air, a mouse with a clothespin on his nose and even the skunk is covering his noses too.
