Archeologist Jack keeps having reoccurring dreams of a past life, where he is the great General Meng Yi, whom is sworn to protect a Korean Princess named OK-soo. Jack decides to go investigate everything with his friend William.
Well, this is another good film from Jackie but far below the standards of the New Police Story... This movie displays the serious and entertaining side of Jackie, in his past life and in reality, a very creative combination indeed! I love the way Stanley and Jackie pulled the different actors and actresses from different countries together which is an excellent way in attracting the people...But, in my opinion, The Myth is rich in the China history and mythology where the Qin Emperor's vision and dream were made a reality...thus, if you want to fully understand the film, knowledge about the Qin Dynasty is necessary... What I like the most is still the Jackie Chan's kungfu flicks and entertaining fighting scenes...especially in the Dasai Tomb and The Rat Glue Factory...another good one will be the fight with the Dasai Prince which switches between reality and past life...But what I do not favor much is the fighting scenes using the computer effects, wirings and the fake backgrounds towards the end... The actresses in the movie is beautiful and it is worth the watch...Mallika Sherawat and Kim Hee Seong are both very attractive in their natural looks. That's what make the movie good in its own sense... But the drawbacks may be the goofs and mistakes which can be spotted by anyone, i think... 1.At the first scene during the rescue of the princess, the wooden carriage which was on fire is hardly seen spreading and it seems that it takes a very long time to burn down that carriage. 2.When Meng Yi were alone trying to hold on to the carriage, we could see that the Korean General came from the opposite direction where he headed before. 3.When Jack was in the shower, we could notice the reflection of camera at the metal shower spray. 4.After Meng Yi had beheaded his enemy, his sword and the princess were not even stained with a single blood drop. 5.There was a sudden change of attires before and after Jack and William went inside the tomb. Well, there are still many of them... But, in overall, the movie is still worth the fun and the money...
Great cinematography and soundtrack. The acting is superb too, and I thought the out-takes at the end were a nice touch. There were parts of the movie that resembled a David Lean production. Five languages spoken in this movie - English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean and (I think) Tamil! The costume design is reminiscent of Roman Army epics which make the columns of soldiers look very majestic - but their Chinese character is also retained.
The movie takes part in two time periods - the Qin Dynasty and today. We are transported from one to the other through Jackie Chan's dreams. In the Qin Dynasty he plays the part of a general whose main responsibility is to protect a Korean princess who has been sent to serve as a concubine in the Imperial Chinese Court. Things get in the way of course, and the two time periods are brought together by a weaving of mythology which involves Indian temples and underground tombs at Xian. Well worth watching - but if you are not used to the genre you may find some aspects a little far fetched.
