A crew of African American pilots in the Tuskegee training program, having faced segregation while kept mostly on the ground during World War II, are called into duty under the guidance of Col. A.J. Bullard.
Italy, 1944. As the war takes its toll on Allied forces in Europe, a squadron of black pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen are finally given the chance to prove themselves in the sky - even as they battle discrimination on the ground. It's a tribute to the unsung heroes who rose above extraordinary challenges and ultimately soared into history.
This is an action movie. Action movies are typically light on character development. They have to give us archetypes so the majority of time can be given to ACTION, otherwise the movies end up being three hours long.
Someone already commented that it was like watching a video game, which seems like a compliment when you think about it because the video game has perfected the First-Person experience. Not that we need to dump 3d, but Lucas shows that a viewer can have a strong visceral experience of being in the 2d action with good camera work, good fight choreography, and good editing.

It does sadden me to say that the poorest performance was delivered by Cuba mugging for the camera. I wish the director had been willing to tell him to take it down a notch. He still has opportunities for better roles, so he does not need to steal scenes.
Also, I think I understand why they chose to pull way back on the music of the day, but I think that was a mistake too. It's like gumbo without filé powder (ground sassafras leaves). It's just not gumbo.
If you really need to see the emotional narrative of the Tuskegee Airmen story, rent the 1995 version, Tuskegee Airmen, and then go see Red Tails. Red Tails is all about the action. If you have ever wondered how men in prop planes could shoot down German jets, which these men definitely did, this movie will show you how they did it....oh yeah, while being fired on, and while flying between bombers in formation. Absolutely AMAZING.
**First let me preface this by saying, I'm a WW2 buff and believe that the Tuskegee airmen have long deserved more attention and credit than they have received. It's just too bad such a bad movie was made to pay homage.**
Red Tails.... the dialogue.... SO WOODEN!! And unbelievable. And there were pauses between lines that lasted a good second too long! I walked out 5 minutes into it. Even the action in that first five minutes... they found a way to make it unexciting! I'm not sure how. But it's the fastest I've EVER walked out of a movie in my life!
I can only conclude that Lucas had his hands in this movie FAR beyond what his EP (executive producer) credit would imply. I've seen some of the director's other movies, and they've been good, or at least OK. It could be that some of the blame lies with the writer?? But the stilted, wooden dialogue really does seem to harken back to some of Lucas's recent outings. Namely Episode I and II. And it IS his studio (Lucasfilm), after all. So I'm sure he must have been involved much more than otherwise would have been desirable.
George Lucas served as executive producer for this effects-heavy action film about the Tuskegee Airmen, and it feels as synthetic and dull as "The Phantom Menace."
