Martin Blank is a freelance hitman who starts to develop a conscience, which causes him to muff a couple of routine assignments. On the advice of his secretary and his psychiatrist, he attends his 10th year High School reunion in Grosse Pointe, Michigan (a Detroit suburb where he's also contracted to kill someone). Hot on his tail are a couple of over-enthusiastic federal agents, another assassin who wants to kill him, and Grocer, an assassin who wants him to join an "Assassin's Union."
Martin Blank and is a hitman with some emotional problems. He goes to a shrink who doesn't want him, and has had recurring dreams about his long lost love for 10 years since he stood her up on Prom night. When Blank gets an invitation to his School reunion he is originally dead against the idea, but when he is hired for a job in his home town he is forced to return home, and to face some old truths.
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997): Dir: George Armitage / Cast: John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Alan Arkin, Dan Aykroyd, Joan Cusack: Empty headed comic thriller starring John Cusack as Blank who is headed to Grosse Pointe to attend his high school reunion. He is also targeted by the F.B.I. and several hit men because he wishes to leave his old lifestyle behind. He aims to reunite with Minnie Driver whom he stood up at the prom. Director George Armitage is inventive despite the disaster it all becomes. For all of its production and ideas the cast linger as if being bounced back and forth within a pinball machine. Cusack is involved in a lame sequence with Dan Aykroyd where they draw guns on each other in a restaurant. Then there is the convenient store shootout with an employee on the arcade game. It makes little sense and Cusack can only hint the potential the role had before its sentimental conclusion. Driver starts out well as the disc jockey until becoming reduced to romantic clichés. Alan Arkin has his moments as Cusack's therapist but it is a one note role that hardly elevates. Aykroyd is a complete miscast as a hit-man out to bring down Cusack in a very violent conclusion. And of course, Joan Cusack in support of her brother and makes an appearance. Theme regards empty lives due to bad choices. The film had good ideas that were hindered by its level of violence. Score: 5 / 10
What can I say that hasn't already been said? It is a great film. The plot IS there, it's funny, gripping and thrilling. It's well written and well acted. This one is definitely in my top 100 (in no particular order!!). It also has a suprising cameo from Benny "The Jet" Urquidez, he's an ugly geezer! (Sorry Jet, just in case he knows where I live!).
A bleak, black satire that occasionally strays all the way into "Pulp Fiction" territory.
Since Grocer killed the man that Martin was trying to protect in the opening scene of the film, Grocer thought it might be a good idea to form an underground union of sorts made up of himself & several other assassins who were all clamoring for work around the world after they'd left their respective organizations. Martin worked for several years for the CIA and went independent. It appears that Grocer had as well. As Grocer says, the guild would help them prevent "embarrassing overlap" like the assassination that happened a short time before: Martin shot and killed the cyclist who was going to shoot the man coming out of the hotel. Grocer then showed up and killed the man Martin was protecting.
Grocer's motivation in asking Martin to join is probably that he knows that Martin is an effective contract killer and would be a great benefit to the guild. However, Martin dislikes the idea of working for anyone but himself and especially doesn't want to work for Grocer. He also mentions during the cafe scene when talking to Grocer that "bad things start happening" when people like them join forces. Martin might have some experience in that area but he might also know about the experiences of peers that ended badly -- they may have turned on each other in a grab for power or money.
Out of petty revenge, Grocer calls Lardner and his partner and informs them that Martin will be targeting Debi's father in Detroit & they're sent out to catch Martin in the act and kill him as an enemy of the state. He's a member of the Basque organization who has been contracted by another of Martin's clients to kill Martin.
Some months before the story opens, Martin had been contracted by one of his clients to kill someone for them. While he was trying to complete the contract, a dog, that the mark(s) had borrowed from Martin's clients was accidentally killed while retrieving a stick of dynamite they'd been using to flush game while hunting.
