A football player and his friends travel to the planet Mongo and find themselves fighting the tyranny of Ming the Merciless to save Earth.
Flash Gordon is an American football hero who is skyjacked aboard Dr. Hans Zarkov's rocketship along with his beautiful girlfriend Dale Arden. The threesome are drawn into the influence of the planet Mongo, ruled by Emperor Ming the Merciless. The evil Ming has been testing Earth with unnatural disasters, and deeming our world a threat to his rule. He also intends to take Dale as his concubine, attempts to execute Flash and intends to destroy Earth. Flash must avoid the amorous attentions of Ming's daughter, and unite the warring kingdoms of Mongo to rescue Dale and save our world.
I've seen Flash Gordon now for the very first time in my life. In every "geek-comedy" series there are some jokes about Flash, so I MUST try it. And I think -- i is not bad film,at all. But something is too much even for me.
But I recommend to everyone who likes The Big Bang Theory or similar series right this movie, it is half-comedy, half-action... half-whatever, but it is fine, old, psychedelic and I think a little of its own way very absurd. ;)
About characters -- they are obvious, schematic and archetypal. Badass is bad-ass and looks like bad-ass, good one looks like Ashtar Sheran (or what is that Universe-people guy name ;)), girl looks like model, Badass's daughter is nice, cold and at the very end she cries.
Next I've noticed were almost theathral actors-work. Like some kind of musical, I think.
I know, it is remake of comics story (which I do not know at all), so I know people who loves it will give +2 points just because it.
After all, I think it is fine movie, funny and I think it is needed to be seen ;)
I have purchased as many DVDs and VHS copies as needed for my big family as Christmas gifts. It will thrill all members from 4-104, so I know I can't go wrong. Neither can you! Don't miss this vintage character, Flash Gordon, in his 1980 spectacular update! It is sort of tongue-in-cheek ,perhaps , but certainly captures the original strip's far out sci-fi feeling,and visual impact-- and beyond Too bad I missed it on the big screen, it must have been smashing, but you too, will be very satisfied with a home video version. Whatever your age this is totally cool!
The story concept contains many twists and turns, and the variety of evil doers are truly eye-popping. I particularly loved the "non-sophisticacation" of the film. I appreciated an absence of "Hollywood over-kill special effects". They managed to pull this film off with minimal bombing and ear-drum shattering sound effects! A must see!
The expensive new version of Flash Gordon is a lot more gaudy, and just as dumb, as the original series starring Buster Crabbe. Sam J. Jones in the title role has even less thespic range than Crabbe, but the badness of his performance is part of the fun of the film. Jones, a former Playgirl nude centerfold whose only previous film role was the husband of Bo Derek in 10, lumbers vacantly through the part of Flash Gordon with the naivete, fearlessness, and dopey line readings familiar from the 1930s serials. Film benefits greatly from the adroit performance of Max von Sydow as Emperor Ming.
